#Morocco 2025 - #kestrel
This beautiful bird was so incredibly well camouflaged against the sandstone cliffs it looked like it could have been sculpted from the rock and brought to life.

Photograph of a, likely juvenile male, kestrel (please correct me if I'm wrong about sex) sitting on a cliff of ocher sandstone, looking over its shoulder. The bird, with its brown wings patterned with black spots, buff breast, similarly spotted, and orange brown face and rump matches the patterned rock, only the white shoulder and grey tail barred with black breaking its camouflage. The main tell tail sign of its presence, and a sign that this is a frequent perch are the streaks of white bird poo extending down the rock face, which indeed was the thing that stood out at the long distance we were from the cliff and which, along with its call, led us to notice the bird in the first place.

It's so incredible how low homicide rates are in Europe. The UK, with a population of 70 million people, had fewer than 600 murders in 2023.

Note, the pastor is unarmed! Yet they still see him as a threat just for standing there.

I've observed "off duty" birds, as it were, who I would describe as pensive.

#Morocco Sept 2025
It felt strange getting better and more (if distant) views of some "British" birds on #migration than I can back home
This beautiful ♀️pied flycatcher was enjoying the evening sun

A female pied flycatcher photographed in Morocco during her migration south from her breeding grounds in Europe. She is sitting on a succulent bush, a cactus in the foreground. She is back-lit by late afternoon sun, imparting a glow on her and her surroundings. Original photo cropped and enlarged as she, like most of the birds we saw, was quite distant.

More on Teesmouth seal pup deaths, suggesting sewage effluent and legacy of industrial pollution may have exacerbated natural mortality. Typical comedy response from Northumbrian Water saying they couldn't possibly be responsible for faecal bacteria in estuary.

Indeed, studies have shown that immigrants are convicted of violent felonies at just 1/3 of the rate natural born Americans do. Removing immigrants will actually increase the per-capita statistic for violent crime convictions.

Each summer in Glynn County, GA, thousands of imperiled loggerheads struggle across the sand to the ocean for their first swim, but the lights of a nearby highway exit have turned their journey from difficult to deadly.

Scottish pine martins are being reintroduced all over England and Wales.

We've even had sightings here in the New Forest, about as far south from Scotland as you can get:
