9. Hand 🖐️
Raspail tomb, by Antoine Etex (1854) — Cimetière du Père Lachaise, Paris 🇫🇷

‘Within the Realm of a Dying Sun’ by Dead Can Dance is playing. On the cover, there’s a mysterious figure draped in a shroud. She clasps her hand around the prison bars in a silent act of devotion.

#31DaysOfGraves Day 9 - Hand: The memorial to Maria Clementina Sobieski (1702-1735) at St Peter's Basilica features the personification of Charity holding out a flaming heart in her hand.
A close-up of the marble arm and hand of a statue. A gold flame is raised from the centre of the statue's palm. This image shows the hand belongs to a woman, who holds a portrait of the deceased in her other hand, and has a cherub to her left. Another angle of the monument shows additional cherubs, and that the monument is situated above a doorway. The photo has a orange tint due to the sunrise.

#31DaysofGraves Day 8 Glass.

A domestic take on the memorial window. By E Liddall Armitage, for James Powell & Sons, in the tucked-away church of St Mary's, Burghfield.

The border of birds, the doubtless much loved pets, & the little flock of sheep - all lift the spirits. @iangrebe.bsky.social

#31DaysOfGraves Day 8 - Glass: Sun coming through the stained glass window of the Cory-Wright mausoleum at Highgate Cemetery #London
A large circular stained glass window reflects orange light on to the inside wall of a mausoleum. The text around the window reads "the eternal God is thy refuge and underneath are the everlasting arms"

It was amazing. I would've spent a lot longer there but it was reaching 40° and the mosquitos were after me!

#31daysofgraves Day 7 angel. In this case a lost angel in Dunblane Cathedral graveyard, sadly no longer visible, but we do have an image of it from about 100yrs ago of how lovely it looked. Image from Dunblane Museum.

#31DaysOfGraves Day 7 - Angel: An angel reaches down for Adriano Schiavetti (1914-1923) at Verano Monumental Cemetery/Cimitero del Verano, Rome/Roma.
A large marble monument. A statue of a young boy stands at the base of a pedestal, and a large angel leans down over him from above. A closer view of the angel at the top of the monument.

Tuve que buscar algunas palabras pero este es excelente! Un estudio muy interesante 🏳️‍🌈

Christian burials traditionally face east so that they face Christ during the Second Coming. The clergy face west so they are ready to lead their people. With the advent of C19th cemeteries many graves were lined to face pathways instead and it became more dependent on individual cemetery landscapes

That's interesting, I've never noticed that here (Liverpool). It may be that it's only because I've looked at C19th and it becomes more common later, or I've overlooked it!

I've never seen a male 'relict' or even a man referred to as a widower. If a relationship is mentioned it's usually son but sometimes husband (even if the woman died first). Here's my stats from a sample of c.4,000 graves in Liverpool! (Of course limited by assuming binary gender from first name).

William Button's describes him as "a husband dear, and father kind". Although these are not widespread in the early C19th many clearly differ from the contemporary middle-class gender expectations, and increase rapidly at the end of the century.

#31DaysOfGraves Day 6 - Gender: My PhD research found that women were (perhaps surprisingly?) well represented in the cemetery. Widows were regularly purchasing grave plots well before the Women's Property Acts. James Wall's headstone states it was erected by "his relict".
A slate headstone with broken cross at the top. It commemorates James Wall and states it was "Erected by his relict" An overgrown headstone in memory of William Button. A verse beneath states he was "a husband dear, and father kind"
