If you told me in 2003 that in 2024 my kids would be singing Maps by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but had no further interest in the band, I'd ask if you had anything more important to report from the future.

I had a dream that it happened. I was reading about it here. But I woke up and you all let me down.

I was reading an article about the cancellation of food aid to Minnesota, and it reminded me of a story about my dad. He was a vet, an organizer and very deeply involved in his church. And one day he stood up and asked a question: “what the f*ck’s the point of having a church?”

A useful thread to read as I try to write a novel where it's just sort of exploring a big world and meeting the weirdos in it.
This set of observations is produced by my scrolling Reddit and otherwise listening to people talk about "how to write."

A) there is no requirement that any of your characters has any sort of "arc" let alone a redemption.

B) there is also no requirement that your fiction has a plot.

The argument here seems to be we need to be happy when people use democracy to do terrible things or they will do terrible things without democracy.

The system is the means not the end.
The unique threat of the last decade has been the emergence of a political movement which wants to operate outside of passing bills and governing through regular order.

The thing about his bandaged hand is that it's not like the hand is the only or even the best place to get an IV. Either he's obstinately insisting on the hand or he's completely shot numerous veins on both forearms. Meaning whatever this is has been going on for a long while.

I was driving behind a small bus with a sticker that read, "THIS VEHICLE STOPS AT ALL RAILROAD CROSSINGS," when it stopped at a railroad crossing. I've never felt a meme harder in my life.

It occurs to me that the "grown ups" containing him "for the good of the country" last time actually did us all a disservice. If he'd been surrounded by these goons then, he would have been gone in six months.
Donald Trump is crumbling before us.

Pete Hegseth is under fire for war crimes, with congressional inquiries looming.

Kash Patel is getting publicly humiliated by his own FBI agents.

RFK Jr.'s freak flag is getting national attention thanks to the Lizza-Nuzzi insanity.

The wheels are coming off.

This whole thing, but especially these two lines: "the makers of AI aren’t damned by their failures, they’re damned by their goals. They want to build a genie to grant them wishes, and their wish is that nobody ever has to make art again."

Creating is human. Why would I want to give it up?

Thanksgiving convo starter for people with supercool relatives: what do you like best about the guy, that he would pal around with a notorious pedophile or the high likelihood that he is one himself?

After years of calling normie Dems commies, the fascists in power couldn't move the needle on support for Lenin if he was running with a D next to his name. D already means commie to their supporters, and everyone else is rolling their eyes.

Guillermo del Toro on wealth: "a wealthy man is a man who has enough, not a man that needs more. If you have enough to invite someone for a beer? You're rich. If you have a yacht, planes, islands, and you still need more? You're not rich."

After announcing a $20 billion bailout of Argentina, the White House now says it's pausing $18 billion in funding for NYC infrastructure projects
