When I visited the Computer History Museum (Calif), they had some stuff that my dad worked on!

He was editing his village magazine on DTP into his 80s.

Never did embrace internet or mobile phones, though.

Yes, you elect an individual, but a key part of that is their party affiliation.
And the affiliation does impose certain restrictions ("the whip").
If the affiliation changes, you should have the chance to reconsider your choice.
You may still choose the same person; you might prefer another.
