I remember seeing an article a while back that had Richard Dearlove go through his personal StB file. He was pleasantly surprised to read that they considered him a legitimate diplomat throughout his posting!

I think this is putting it a *bit* too boldly, though I agree with your overall point. There was/is some utility to clean slots for early career officers (eg Marti Peterson). But yeah, as @wylienewmark.bsky.social said, the important thing is to conceal the operational act. Cover for action > status
