Plan of the #Roman amphitheatre of Viminacium, Serbia. Discovery and analysis of brown bear remains here indicate bears were captured nearby and forced to fight for entertainment.

Did you know? 💭
Sloth bears have several adaptations for a myrmecophagous lifestyle, meaning they eat mostly ants and termites.

Thanks Becky, glad you liked it. It’s good to bring all the different strands together and certainly couldn’t be done without commercial archaeology.

I really enjoyed meeting the @suttontrust.bsky.social students @uniofnottingham.bsky.social today and sharing the wonder of #archaeology. I suspect they now know more about 🐻 than they ever thought they would.

The theatre wasn't the only form of entertainment in Elizabethan England, though. Just down the road from the Globe were several 'bear gardens', where the unpleasant (but popular) 'sport' of bear baiting was staged 2/2

#OnThisDay in 1613 the Globe Theatre, built by William #Shakespeare's play company, burned down.
It was rebuilt the following year but ultimately pulled down for good between 1644-45 to make room for tenement buildings 1/2

During his life, Mistahi-maskwa (Big Bear) was one of the most important chiefs of the 19th century.
He pushed for peace, and for the prosperity of his people.
Despite this, he spent his last years imprisoned for treason.
This is his story.

The photograph depicts an elderly individual seated, wrapped in a patterned blanket with a checkered design in shades of brown and white. The person is wearing a loose, long-sleeved shirt and has long, dark hair. Their hands are visible, with one holding a small object and the other resting on a chain that appears to be attached to their wrist, suggesting restraint. The background is plain and neutral, and the image has a sepia tone, indicating it may be historical.

Spring bears are thin bears

this one is my favorite because it was posted to a forum as "probable escaped orangutan".

is it time to bust out my "bigfoot is bears" photo collection again? if your mental image of a bear is a thick-furred, fat glossy male bear in autumn, you're probably not prepared for how weird their proportions can look in spring, or when walking upright, like they frequently do.
a bear walking upright, away from a trail camera a skinny bear standing up on its hind legs, rummaging through a picnic area a skinny bear with rangy, ape-like proportions, walking on all fours a mangy bear digging out a stump
