“In one of the most astonishing political transformations in the history of democracy,” Hitler destroyed “a constitutional republic through constitutional means,” Timothy W. Ryback wrote in January.

Agree. But De Wever should return the favour and visit Berlin, demanding to send the Taurus.
Merz throws his full weight behind the EU & Belgium to share the risk burden & is going to Brussels to press @Bart_DeWever to let Europe use frozen Russian assets for Ukraine’s defense.
It’s refreshing to see a 🇩🇪@bundeskanzler step up, even if Belgium seems unlikely to budge.

The new US National Security Strategy, in its predictable and characteristic ugliness, is a good occasion for Europe to finally let go of the time-consuming transatlantic crisis management efforts and start focusing on a proper and proactive own strategy instead.
Europe Needs A New Strategy Too
The new US National Security Strategy helps - or forces - European leaders to let go of the consuming transatlantic crisis management efforts and to focus on an own strategy instead.

This. The goals of Putin haven't changed. In the first days of the war in 2022, Russia tried to take over Kyiv and Odessa, so it would control Ukraine and create a landbridge towards Russian Transnistria. The next logical step would be taking over Moldova and the Baltics, restoring the former SU.
Europeans refuse to acknowledge that they're already at war with Russia - and Ukrainians are protecting their freedom and dying in their stead.

Oleksandr Yakovenko has a wakeup call: treat the invasion seriously before it's too late.

If the guys at the top behave like savages, what do you think will happen way down the pecking order? This is state guided terror.
My constituent, Wilmer, was mauled by an ICE attack dog despite the fact that, as he has consistently explained, he was not resisting arrest or trying to flee—his wife and young children, all U.S. citizens, were forced to watch helplessly as Wilmer was violently attacked and dragged away.

If Europe gives back the Russian frozen assets, it'll be pretty ironic when Russia uses that money to rebuild its military and attack Europe.
Can't get stupider than this.

It is again particularly blatant as Russia claims to have 'liberated' (= occupied) cities where fighting is still ongoing.

News agencies, on which outlets heavily rely, often stick to conveying russian disinformation as is, without adding the necessary context that would show Moscow's propaganda.
In the name of balanced reporting, news outlets often cite Russian media sources verbatim, thereby helping to spread misinformation. The Barents Observer contextualizes Russian propaganda by adding the sentence, "That statement is not true," which prevents Russian lies from being perpetuated.

Ernst Fränkel's historical analysis of the degeneration of the rule of law in Nazi Germany seems likewise true for the USA under Trump. The legal system in the Third Reich didn't just stop functioning. It was pushed in a zone of unchecked violence and arbitrariness.
This is what Ernst Frankel, a German-Jewish lawyer & political scientist living in Germany during the time of the Third Reich, calls the dual-state model of justice. The normative state and the prerogative state.
