maybe i'm manifesting something evil here but i would go for the concept of walking up to someone and giving them some cash like "yeah gimme 10 article tokens" and then using them as i please to unlock peoples' newsletter paywalls or patreon posts

I wish it was possible to spend cash or coins online easily because I'd totally give people $5-$7 in my wallet or loose change to read an article but react negatively to linking my card or paypal account to do the same. ewallets are some of the way there but still not quite in "impulse buy" land
