Santa Ragione are a well-known studio, covered by a great many mainstream outlets. Their latest game will not be releasing on Steam for... reasons? Steam won't tell them why, won't tell them what needs fixing, and won't communicate in general.

Every other store will carry it. Just not Steam.
Our upcoming game HORSES was preemptively banned from Steam, with no path to appeal. The game will still launch next week on December 2nd and will be available on EGS, GOG, Humble, and Itch for $4.99. Here is a detailed FAQ covering what happened: horses.wtf/BannedFromSt...

There's a growing number of games that have apparently fallen foul of Steam's 'No because we say so' rule that are still being happily sold on other major storefronts like GOG.

Also recently DreadXP-published game Vile was outright rejected by Steam too, despite containing *nothing* objectionable.
Vile Is Banned
Developer Statement: VILE: Exhumed is a game about searching through an old computer, uncovering dark secrets, and experiencing the horrors […]

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

I’ve heard of fully all ages titles getting dinged for characters making *jokes* about sexual topics just because they’re depicted in school uniforms. I’ve seen plenty of mystery bans too (AA cut, no school uniforms, no even vaguely underage looking characters but nope, banned)

They nearly banned the fucking educational esperanto VN because it had a non-sexual communal bath scene with *implied* nudity

It’s a complete crapshoot whether you’ll get a reviewer who will tell you what the issue with your game is and give you an opportunity to resubmit or if you’ll just get your game permabanned and accused of promoting child abuse.

LRP Valve has been doing this for a few years now, but no one tends to care since it mostly affects “anime” games that people perceive as having no value. The only consistent thing about Valves content policy is that they will, under no circumstances, reconsider a decision.

sometimes porn games are allowed to be there. sometimes they aren't. (esp if they're from asia 🙃)

sometimes a game is deemed porn when it isn't. (esp if they're queer 🙃)

sometimes a game is allowed, and makes it all the way to the point where people can buy it. then all of a sudden, it isn't!!!

you have no control over who gets to stamp Yay or Nay on you. you get a single shot. if you don't think it's fair? sorry, ""valve"" has made its decision and it's final

the thing you have to know about working with valve is that, in practice, "flat leadership" means "whether your game gets to go on the store OR is permanently and irrevocably dragged behind the shed and shot is entirely up to the individual moral values of the SINGLE person reviewing it"
love living under a hays code/comics code authority except it's in some ways worse, because it's not actually codified anywhere and it's enforced opaquely on purpose to avoid accountability at every stage

when a sexy side character isn't popular enough to develop much of her own fan art scene and gets her tags colonized by slop machine pictures call that Abandonwife
Kirche von Zerbst from The Familiar of Zero, has little to no Rule34; As requested by an Anonymous who said that AI is clogging her tags, which is a shame.

If you don't get that the "yucky porn games" are the gateway to censor further media that YOU personally think is acceptable, you need to get your head out of your ass. They're trying to divide people into smaller groups so their collective power is also smaller. Kill the cop in your head.
Already seeing folks say, "Well, HORSES isn't YUCKY PORN like other games are, so..." which is super frustrating.

Now is NOT the time to be throwing the hentai games you happen not to like under the bus. Your rage should be directly at payment processors.
