Royalty payments are as often a not a pleasant surprise. I got a bit less than $500 earlier this month (for a couple things bundled together) and the "Holy shit!" I said to my friend when it arrived sounded like I'd just received BAD news, it was so emphatic.

Leaving aside the question of absolute poverty, I think people often don't get how poor writers are--and these are often writers with day jobs (or that have had day jobs, but layoffs are common), mind you. But one can't do one's day job from a hospital bed.

If Steam were the only store in town (rather than simply "the biggest" which already has make-or-break compatibility), this game would not come out -at all-.
