Someone tell Elon Musk the baby bust is cancelled. Declining fertility rates aren’t an impending apocalypse forcing us to become like hand maiden’s tale. Most couples still have 2 kids, they’re just putting off when they have kids.
ourworldindata.org/total-fertil...
Why the total fertility rate doesn’t necessarily tell us the number of births women eventually have
The fertility rate is commonly confused with the eventual number of births per woman. This can result in misinterpreting the impact of policies and trends over time.

I'm mad that Trump is projecting by 'weaponizing' the federal government to go after law firms who have employees he dislikes or is mad at.

I'm mad that the media isn't treating this as a bigger story.

I'm mad that the Dems & ex-AG Garland's fecklessness enabled much of this.

For years conservatives and some liberals complained incessantly about ‘cancel culture’ and the lack of ‘free speech’ on campuses. None of that stuff comes even close to what the right is now doing in power, in terms of the open bullying and pressuring of colleges and censoring of curricula.

I have not verified the data myself, but this article seems to undermine a common right-wing talking point about how girls becoming more liberal and using social media is causing some suicide epidemic. Apparently the opposite is happening. Old dudes kill themselves.

Get ready for the next round of lying about teen suicide
“Teen suicide” has been falling since 2017. You never heard about it because anti-social-media and other interests profit from spreading fear. Now, they’ll start grabbing undeserved credit.

We are in the midst of an administrative coup the like of which we have never seen - or even imagined - in our lifetimes.

Every day brings new abuses, new scandals, which can’t just be undone or fixed.

We are in a very dark place as a country and as a constitutional republic right now.

I have been seriously impressed with David Eby’s strong, articulate response to Trump’s attacks on Canadian sovereignty and prosperity. I wouldn’t be surprised if he someday leads the country as Prime Minister, but until then I’m proud to have him as my Premier.
In response to the American tariffs, I have directed government and crown agencies to exclude US suppliers from any new purchasing or procurement agreements.

It’s just one of the actions we are taking to prioritize Canada first.

This would be the same Darren Beattie who was fired by the Trump White House after it was revealed that he attended a white nationalist conference. (Those were the days, eh?) He was then hired by Matt Gaetz as a speechwriter, then went on to be a key creator of the "J6 was an FBI op" story.

Al Gore pitched a sovereign wealth fund once, but he called it a “lockbox.”

And it existed bc they’d taxed the wealthy a tiny bit, balanced the budget and had a surplus.

And he only wanted the fund to protect Social Security for Americans who weren’t millionaires.

So the GOP mocked it.

A reminder that on this site folks may be aware that Trump got basically nothing new or substantive from Mexico or Canada but over on the other place, and out in parts of the real world, the GOP are successfully and ruthlessly spinning these as wins. They are messaging masters, Dems aren’t. Sorry 🤷🏽‍♂️

This is a great point. The rampant abuse of power by the Trump regime is being normalized and reported on as almost any other leader. Trump is a massive outlier. He cannot be reported and covered like other leaders. There is a media responsibility to act accordingly instead of trying to paper over
if you work at a newspaper or news outlet, it is your moral obligation to go shout at your bosses that the country is in the middle of a constitutional meltdown and they need to cover it with the same screaming 72-point all caps headlines they would if we were being attacked by a foreign invader

Worth noting that McConnell refusing to whip votes to convict Trump at his impeachment trial (or vote himself to convict) is *why* we’re now in a position where a trade war with our allies could happen. If McConnell is looking for the person at fault, he might want to consult a mirror.
Mitch McConnell: Tariffs "will drive the cost of everything up. In other words, it will be paid for by American consumers. I mean, why would you want to get in a fight with your allies over this?"

I hope this resurgence of Canadian nationalism can be leveraged into a renewed sense of the common good and our need to take back control over our economic destiny. We allowed our resources to be taken over by American companies and have been in a neoliberal sleepwalk since Mulroney. No more.

Canada has for a long time needed an industrial policy that strengthens our productivity through high-level coordination of wages and investment, investments in infrastructure & skills. Far too much of our economy goes into real estate speculation and capital outflows to foreign shareholders.

Canada should to look to successful countries like Norway, which developed the resources and people of the nation through an empowered working class and a strong national strategy. The people of Canada should be masters of their destiny not foreign oligarchs and their lackeys.

Canada’s lack of population is a vulnerability. After Wilfred Laurier left office, Canada shut its doors to immigration and succumbed to remaining a small dependent economy far too reliant on raw resource export and dominated by corporate America. Tommy Douglas, Ed Broadbent & John Turner warned us.
