But he would rather condemn me than fight for the rights of women and girls I expected more from Ardal. I never thought he would intone the catechism. "I still get on great with everyone," he said in a recent interview with The Times, "though I haven't seen much of the show's creator, Graham Linehan, and am baffled as to why he got involved in the culture wars. I feel sorry for him - he's entitled to his opinions, but the way he presented them made it confrontational. When I read that, I phoned him immediately. When people betray me, I always make the mistake of phoning them straight away. My heart was thumping in my chest as I found his number and gave him a faux-polite, "Hey Ardal, how's it going?". My anger was already boiling. I knew exactly what he would say - the exact same things Bill Bailey said when I phoned him, the exact same things Amelia Bullmore said when I wrote to her. I knew, and I phoned anyway, because I can't help myself. And when he started reading from the same script as all the others, I lost my temper. At some point, Ardal said, "I just disagree with you." I would have said all this to him on the phone, but I was so angry I could not get any of it out. In fact, at one point I said, "You're on my f--ing s--t list." Ridiculous, of course, but unfortunately true. Like Father Ted at the Golden Cleric Awards, I keep a tally of every person who took the easy path and watched me twist in the wind. I can't help it. I remember them all. Tim Heidecker saying I'd gone down a "rabbit hole". David O'Doherty, who didn't have the guts to speak to me. My own brother-in-law publicly calling me insane. Adam Buxton, Jon Ronson, Richard Herring, Stewart Lee. People who knew me, people who had my phone number, people who could have asked, people who assumed the worst because doing otherwise would have exposed them to the same treatment I was receiving. In condemning me, to use Douglas Murray's line, they raise a little flag outside their home so the mob will pass them by. And every time one of them hands a journalist another little quote - another "baffled," another "sorry," another "he's awful, but I hope he's okay" - they get to carry on with their lives while mine gets smaller. Post Brianna Wu O Subscribe Trans sisters. I'm pretty sure I was wrong. I an somy. I genuinely thought that as a trans woman, if ceded some points with the gender critical crowd we could have a healthier conversation and arrive at better public policy. The problem is, they are getting crazier and more extreme. If you admit "trans women don't belong in women's sports" they agree, but call you a man the whole time. If you admit, "I understand I am a biological man, but this is how I want to live my life and talking about me like this is degrading" they scream about free speech. If you admit that hurtful language is part of free speech but you don't have to associate with people that degrade you, they act like the victim and call you a man and then say you should be thrown in an insane asylum. It's like this on everything. They are incapable of looking for a middle ground on bathrooms. They want maximalist policies on everything. They'd throw a fully transitioned, fully passing trans woman in male prison genpop and laugh as she got aids from being raped. I want a middle ground on so many of these polices. BUT THE FUNDAMENTAL PROBLEM IS THEY DO NOT. They enjoy degrading us, it's fun for them. So, sisters. I genuinely don't know what to do. I think many of our most extreme ideas are bad. But theirs are worse. So if I have to pick, I choose us. I wish there were a political vehicle for compromise and medical safeguarding. But that just simply does not exist.
