On World Octopus Day please remember that an octopus feels pain. Its heart can be broken. All three of them. When an octopus is attacked, and squirts out ink, it's actually writing a poem in the water, hoping to escape while its attacker is enraptured by the poem’s song of yearning for lost love.

BREAKING: Trump is now calling for the arrests of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker.

Just hours after deploying the Texas National Guard into their state without consent.

This isn’t law enforcement. It’s political warfare. Wake up.

The elimination of USAID is a moral atrocity and all involved made a choice to enable, and then lie about, ending the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the world.
MAE SOT, Thailand (AP) - Mohammed Taher clutched the lifeless body of his 2-year-old son and wept. Ever since his family's food rations stopped arriving at their internment camp in Myanmar in April, the father had watched helplessly as his once-vibrant baby boy weakened, suffering from diarrhea and begging for food.
On May 21, exactly two weeks after Taher's little boy died, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio sat before Congress and declared: "No one has died" because of his government's decision to gut its foreign aid program. Rubio also insisted: "No children are dying on my watch."
That, Taher says, "is a lie."

It's grimly funny to read these 'subtle slow drip maneuvering' theories, when the defeated candidate had his supporters march on the seat of government, the richest man in the world made nazi salutes at investiture, and they summoned the higher officers of the Department of War for a dressing down

Actually it did begin with a parade of tanks

NEW: The militarization of American cities isn’t happening with a parade of tanks. It’s a slow drip of troop deployments that are probing courts’ willingness to give unlimited deference to the commander in chief — and testing workarounds when they don’t.

Mandatory recommendation for 'Other Minds: The Octopus, the Sea, and the Deep Origins of Consciousness' by Peter Godfrey-Smith - one of the best science books I've ever read.

Huge respect to Lord Heseltine, stoically turning up, at 92, in that racist sandpit of halfwitted baby freaks, to teach them some history, remind them what an electable Tory party looked like and tolerate inanities that must be insufferable for a political titan of his standing.

I’m not an uncritical fan of Hezza, but when he’s right, he’s right.

“You described Reform and other parties across Europe today as among the 'right wing equivalents of the fascists in the 1930s'. Why?”

“Because that’s what they are”

@vicderbyshire.bsky.social asks Lord Heseltine about remarks he made at Conservative Party Conference.

They also meant the council was somewhere people could go, in person, for help, advice or to raise a concern. Not any more....

I've made this point before, so apologies in advance but: those Victorian town halls often on the High Street *said something* about how people felt about their home town. 1/2

Lethal skewering this, in particular this paragraph skewering the idea that Handswortg is an integration failure when it is a multi-ethnic integration success story.

As Mrs Merton might say “what is it about this 9% white ward that led you to frame it as an integration failure?”

Can we pause and imagine the well of sympathy in the Telegraph for HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of overstaying foreigners in the UK who don't speak English. Polluting the culture.

This lurid headline is about British tourists no longer getting away with overstaying in Schengen. Or being 'illegals', as it's often called in the UK.
