In English we know it as “Carol of the Bells,” but the melody arises from a Ukrainian folk tradition of songs welcoming the new year and summoning the forces of nature to meet human labor and bring prosperity.
Do listen.
I wrote about the history here: snyder.substack.com/p/o-generous...
Another beautiful Shchedryk performance amidst ruins.

It was set in what used to be a DTEK thermal power plant — now destroyed by russia.

The contrast between russia’s destructive nature and the Ukrainian will to create beauty even in the darkest times is palpable.

This was from 2016. Proves you can be a dick for a long time. And we're paying for his elevation to the Lords. The place should be shut down if clowns like him exist in it.

Criticising Trump was deemed to be a terrorist act in the USA last week. Reform is now trying the same approach here, accusing Starmer of inciting terrorism for criticising Farage. In both cases, the direction of travel is towards full-on fascism. www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2025/10...

Chris Hedges, the noted anti-fascist campaigner in the USA,  has recently pointed out that fascists are unusually candid. They tell you what they are going to do. The problem is not that they hide the...

Spotted this great quote recently and your remark makes me think about that. It’s about what kind of standards are we prepared to uphold or give sway to, and the social and historical consequences that come from that. Facts and truth, right vs wrong; they’re pinnacles of social justice + democracy.
