In our study, led by the amazing Taylor Burns, we found that masking of autistic traits may leave autistic people vulnerable to identity distress which in turn effects mental health. This means constantly adapting to neurotypical norms may make it hard for autistic people to hold on to who they are

New research involving @drmbothapsych.bsky.social in our @durhampsych.bsky.social finds that identity distress (where someone has difficulty forming a cohesive sense of identity) is at the heart of higher rates of poor mental health experienced by autistic people. Find out more 👉 bit.ly/3KMtz88

Again and again, studies that actually ask people what autism research should prioritise find that the funding landscape bears little relation to stakeholders' priorities.

The RFK Jr project is even worse: politically motivated, unscientific & anti-Autistic.

At the cost of the autistics who any way where not considered, it's an attempt to control the pregnancy, and women. They want women under male autority. This will never be fine.

One of the extraordinary claims from the Orange Leader about autism, Tylenol and vaccines, yesterday, was that if people do as he suggests, there was no downside. "Nothing bad can happen". Just good things would happen, apparently.

Paracetamol (Tylenol) does not cause autism, and it is a source of great dismay that autism researchers and Autistic advocates still have to spend so much time battling misinformation.

Research on causes of autism systematically fails to control for the existence and behaviour of Autistic parents.

Queer and neurodivergent people are biological facts.

We are stable parts of the human genome.

Specialists have a new phrase for autistic children too exhausted to attempt school. "Emotionally based school avoidance".
Well, no. Forcing exhausted children to endure yet more pain, overwhelm, bullying and bewilderment, in a system 100% not designed for them, isn't an 'emotional' failure, is it.

So my keynote at #AECongress25 involved a lot of memes to illustrate my points about how to understand and apply the neurodiversity paradigm.

The focus is on LIBERATION from OPPRESSIVE systems and beliefs.

This will work best, I believe, when we COLLECTIVISE our action.

Here we go…

A four-panel explainer comic:

Who are groypers and why did charlie Kirk's murderer had their memes engraved on his bullet casings?

Panel 1:
Groypers Are An Ultra-nationalist are an ultra-nationalist neo-nazi group born out of the 2010's meme culture, led by Nick Fuentes, who in 2019 started what was dubbed "The Groyper Wars". They targeted the left, but also mainstream conservatives.
(The drawing for this panel is an angry young man in a MAGA hat, with an AF insignia behind him.)

Panel 2:
Charlie Kirk was one of the main targets of the Groyper Wars. He was considered "a fake conservative" because he accepted to debate with Jewish or gay people. Groypers routinely attempted to derail his debates and force him into extreme positions.
(The drawing shows a recorded debate.)

Panel 3:
Groypers use progressive symbols as a strategy to confuse people about their actual beliefs. for example, the protest song "Bella Ciao" was chosen as one of the "theme songs" of the Groyper Wars.
(The drawing is off a frog troll meme)

"Hey fascist, catch ↑→↓↓↓" is a meme referencing a code for total annihilation in shooting game "Helldivers 2". "*notices bulge* OwO what's this?" is another popular hateful meme used to harass the furry community, a common target of the far-right.

Tyler Robinson is a soldier in the Groyper Wars who has fallen so deep into internet culture that most people can't even recognize it.
