I pledge myself to ensure every Senate Dem is primaried if the they cave on the ACA. If they do, we’ll only be able to afford no insurance, which will free up significant funds to devote to ousting these idiots - the most efficient use of healthcare dollars ever <incandescent rage>

Our Solar System is orbiting the center of our Galaxy at about 220 km/s so in 2025 we collectively traveled something like 7 billion kilometers across the Milky Way. Once in a while, when you have a moment, it’s worthwhile to take a look around, see where you are, and appreciate how far you’ve come.

La (possible) origine française du mot écossais « hogmanay » (qui désigne le dernier jour de l’année)

Et on se souviendra que « au gui l’an neuf » a donné « guignolée »
Here's a December-31st-related etymology: 'hogmanay', a primarily Scottish term for the day.

Its history isn't crystal clear, but the evidence points to a French origin, specifically Old/Middle French aguillanneuf. This was an exclamation, partly composed of the words an 'year' and neuf 'new'.
🙋Did you know that Edinburgh's "official" Hogmanay festivities are an ancient tradition dating back to the last century? 🎆
1993 to be precise.
The event was dreamed up by Edinburgh Marketing and Unique Events Ltd. to "[package] Edinburgh more effectively" and thus "improve the visitor experience" 🧵👇

I do not know what a Nordic spa is but IcelandAir is always showing me very relaxed looking attractive people in hot pools so I am excited about finding out.
A Quebec-based chain of nordic spas filed preliminary plans with the City of Seattle earlier this week to convert the former Hard Rock Cafe downtown (116 Pike St). Strøm currently operates five locations across the province.

🚨 WA and other vote-by-mail states:

The post office changed its postmark policy and no longer guarantees a postmark will be given on the date mail is received.

For deadline sensitive mail, like ballots, this means that you need to mail far in advance (10+ days before) or use a drop box. #waelex

🚨 Dear public/emergency communicators:

Please do all you can to communicate emergency information to non-English speakers in their languages.

Posting on social media isn’t enough!

A shocking amount of emergency info doesn’t make it to speakers of other languages.

This!
We must note that @viviansong.bsky.social, despite being only woman of color on the board, twice elected to the board, won most votes of any director in 2025, has yet to be elected to a board officer position. For a district that claims to make racial equity a priority, this is unacceptable.

And here's @robertcruickshank.com on SOFG and the Seattle School Board.
NEW: At Wednesday's board meeting Director Liza Rankin claimed SPS is "not doing SOFG." That's not true. Student Outcomes Focused Governance remains deeply embedded in board and district practice. We've got the details:
Issue 8 -- Yes, SPS Is Still Using SOFG
SPS uses a controversial governance model to guide board procedures and relations with the superintendent. Liza Rankin incorrectly claimed it doesn't.

At tonight’s board meeting, Rankin said this (she did, she supported the 2024 effort to close all option schools), as well as claimed SPS does not use SOFG as a governing model (it does, Rankin led on that).

These misrepresentations of fact and of history are unacceptable in an elected official.
Now Director Rankin says "I never said I want to close option schools." (No comment from your scribe.)

Ugh no more Rankin committees of one
Rankin wants to write more policy to effect changes here.

This should actually be a scandal
So there we go again: $27 million that was found in the "couch cushions."
December 11, 2025 at 4:31 AM
Wow - props to Song for noticing this and calling it out. Rankin’s draconian school closure plan based on this $27 mio error is all the more galling
Director Song asks about the Interfund Loan. She says SPS didn't have to use the Interfund Loan after all. This is new info, I hadn't heard this before. Buttleman says that they had to do that to "balance" the budget, even though they never used it. That was a $27 million "loan" that was never used.

Yes, of course it’s a problem because these are math skills public school should have covered for free, and at a UC school you’re paying $3000-$5000 per class!
New —

What the internet backlash over rising remedial math at UC San Diego misses: Yes, it's a problem that math scores are going down, but selective, well-resourced universities are arguably best equipped to help students catch up.

More UC San Diego students need remedial math — but is that a problem?
A UCSD report said the school should reject students who struggle with math, but researchers have found that those students are likely to benefit from an elite education.

I genuinely do not understand why anyone in a decision-making role in academia would encourage use of these tools, unless they have a vested interest in the mass destruction of knowledge and thought. In which case, A+++ job taking the university down from the inside

Here it is at work, denying that the East Wing of the White House has been demolished.

Indeed. What’s particularly sad is that in 2015 a board got elected in part with a mandate to fix the math curriculum. Instead it got worse.

SPS 2nd graders did not have their education interrupted by a pandemic. We should be investing more resources at all schools for evidence-based early intervention. How about using that $1B levy voters just passed on our public school kids? Our public school kids deserve it.
Just 57% of SPS 2nd graders are meeting standard in reading. Only 57% of 6th graders are meeting standard in math.

“Staff did not provide hypotheses about what is driving this trend but said they were looking into it.”
