The problem with a lot of prominent Democrats is that they legitimately seem like lizard people, and doing things like “randomly dropping f-bombs in speeches because their consultants told them to” makes that problem worse, not better

Unironically, you can see how these guys’ Twitter brainrot has progressed to this stage where they have trouble remembering that you’re supposed to talk about the Nazis as the bad guys. It’s not a winking nod to neo-Nazis so much as them genuinely forgetting which way is supposed to be up

But I keep getting told that the experts (read: consultants) have solved the 2500-year old problem of effective political rhetoric and will give you the exact right words that will inspire everyone and earn their votes and respect, and Obama just, like, got lucky or something

When all this is done, I think it'll be very important to pay reparations to everyone who was harmed by the fascist outburst. Otherwise you're going to wind up with a bunch of people who feel bitter about the inevitable lack of justice for complicit people doing nasty things.

I think this is heartening for those of us who are young, ambitious and currently a bit washed-up. If we can just survive the next few years and are clever about what we do with the intervening time, we've a real shot at some solid opportunities.

The Disney about-face, I think, underscores something important: however cowardly the leaders of America's institutions may be, at least right now the USA's liberal tradition is rooted far too deeply to be pulled out without a lot of violence.

More violence, I suspect, than the administration has.

In the centre, it says "remember who you are, liberal". On the top left is a painting depicting the 1848 German Revolution. On the top right is the famous painting of Chamberlain's charge. On the bottom left is a cinematic looking photo of an anti-ICE protester walking through tear gas while a sign reads "Every ICE agent will be held to account". On the bottom right is protesters against the dictatorship in Myanmar

I get it, I very much do, but I do also think it's important to note small victories to keep morale up and demonstrate that effective resistance is possible. Think the Bayraktar song in the first days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

And like, he did get away. That's one detainee fewer.

I think, for those of us on the political left, we need to address morale as a real and pressing issue that will fuck up our ability to fight if left unaddressed. We *need* to figure out a way to keep people feeling at least minimally good about things even in shitty situations.

in all seriousness tho i disagree that it's not ideological, the wellness industry was always gonna go fash when the whole thing is built around an arbitrary distinction between "natural and good" and "chemicals (bad)"

While it does really suck to see this, I have to stress: this is almost entirely an elite phenomenon. Your average person on the street, even if they're pretty transphobic, mostly sees this as a weird elite obsession.

What this is to say is that, while they can do a lot of damage before they

yeah, the debates about the ethics of gen-ai itself seem kinda secondary to the societal consequences of building a machine that makes infinite fake news. I think "do we want to live in the world this creates" is a way more straightforward question, with a much clearer answer.
