I've read about how GenZs are not drinking/partying like previous few gens did (Xer here) and generally shun that lifestyle. Many reasons (hi COVID! hey cost of living!) but I bet the constant public image curation of the IG generation is a big part. Sloppy drunk pics might not go well on the feed.

An owner that denies problems. An operator that has no ability to fix problems. And a maintainer that just doesn’t respond to questions. Doesn’t seem like a great way to run a railroad. www.thestar.com/news/gta/why...

A reminder that the US killed 80 people in Venezuela, and it would be nice if the US media cared enough to think that the life of a grandmother in Caracas whose building is destroyed by a US bomb matters as much as the life of a person in the US.

Well this is kind of ironic, I guess?

Also, remember when Wired mattered?

Watching "Band of Brothers" about 25 years late. Aside from the horrors of war, it's fun to see so many "before they were famous" actors. But what was Jimmy Fallon doing in there? He was already a well known goofball on SNL by 2001, so that was just some distracting casting.

Is it a Prairie thing or just a Boomer parent thing to refer to a snowfall as a "dump" I have to stifle myself every time my parents say "we had a big dump last night!" And it happens a lot. 😅

So, what does this emoji mean? 🫡

I think there is something funky happening with my mac's emoji set: as when I searched it in Google the replies were about the "salute" emoji. Is that what you see here? Here are two screenshots of what I see on two pages, same Firefox browser, same Mac.

Hey @cyclingpedestrian.cityof.toronto.ca the Bloor bike lane west of Old Mill Trail has a very dangerous slick of black ice. In general the lane is poorly cleared in this area, but this is the worst spot. Thanks! #biketo #winterbike

Hey @cyclingpedestrian.cityof.toronto.ca please have the curbs on this section of the Bloor bike lanes moved back to their original positions. Cars are just parked in the bike lane, in front of the No Frills in Bloor West Village.

this is the way! I have to do it outside though so I don't bother if it's below -10C or so.
I now hose off my bikes with hot water in a weed sprayer after salty rides.

I had my first wintery ride of the season, AND my first ice wipeout of the year. It is still *fall* I guess. I had a rear winter tire (unstudded) but was holding out to put studs on the front. Then my rear brake froze so I had to use my front descending a steep icy hill... Predictable. Still hurts!

With the Harbord/Hoskin #bikeTO lanes open again from end to end, I thought I'd check out the new design. Great work by the city on these, though I have a few questions and concerns (as always!). youtu.be/eIbFTMKwCyM?...
It took over a year to reopen these bike lanes

I subbed to the @theglobeandmail.com's digital offering for $9/month last year. That was a short term promotion, which I forgot about, and realized I've been paying $37/month since October. Rich for my blood. I called to cancel my subscription, as you can't online, and that was interesting... 1/2

Great NYT dive into the Costco phenomenon. I've watched it go beyond a bulk-temple for suburban soccer parents to enthrall even Gen Z shoppers. I know some who organize group trips and rock Kirkland logo clothes. Cult-like for sure. But also incredibly smart. www.nytimes.com/2024/08/20/d...

Really important question: Why do Brits invariably pronounce L.A. as "Los AngeLEEs." It's not implied in the spelling or in the Spanish roots of the word.

Closer to home, they also say WinnYpeg. But I can forgive that as it's a bit more obscure. Do they just dislike the schwa?

Both an amazing & disturbing thread. Shawn shows that this supposedly "small business" "grassroots" campaign opposing transit lanes on Bathurst, is using AI tools to create videos of a fake person, spewing fake concerns. This will be more and more common. Call it out. Shut it down.
So: the “Protect Bathurst / Dufferin” astroturf campaign run by Summerhill Market had videos of a guy talking about the neighborhood & RapidTO proposal. Real grassroots feel. Took a screenshot & put it into google image search. Guess what?
