Stanley Spencer painted a number of landscapes in and around Maidenhead in Berkshire, of which this work from 1939 is a notable example. It was a rural area of rolling countryside not far from his home in Cookham and where he first went to art college before going to the Slade.

Watched Rear Window, Heretic and The Running Man at the weekend. TRM was ridiculously entertaining.

Particularly enjoyed seeing Jesse Ventura sashaying across the screen as 'Captain Freedom'. I'm looking forward to the new version by Edgar Wright.

I hadn't realised the excellent Scientist and Socialist Steven Rose had died back in July. I was fortunate to meet him in London in 1998, and his life and work are definitely worth checking out.

Dreaming of this still and bright June day at the top of Castle Crag, Borrowdale. Bliss it was in that dawn to be alive, etc, etc.

A summer, bright sky scene taken from the top of Castle Crag, the lowest of the Wainwrights. It contains, jagged upright stones, clearly placed by walkers, green trees and a view across Borrowdale, to rolling, craggy Lake District hills.

Eugène Jansson's painting from 1898 depicts the large expanse of water in central Stockholm known Riddarfjäden. Jansson was one of the most significant artists in the last years of the 19thC to create a style of painting that reflected the essence of Scandinavia.

Where an online search for a particular painting leaps into a league of its own is by making you look at, and appreciate, the 'lesser,' lights of British art, such as Stanley Reed. This is 'The Seamstress,' from 1941.
