First Tice and UAE, now Badenoch and China. It's striking just how compelling authoritarian states seem to them as a point of comparison.

"While Britain was redefining what a woman is, China was building five nuclear reactors," says Kemi Badenoch.

I cannot be the only person curious about how these two things are related

I mean, imagine if they were to throw this much energy and conviction at sorting out bins, or rail pricing, or water quality.

She's nothing if not predictable, is she? I know the Tories aren't keen on anything Green these days, but pretty much all they've done this week is recycle stuff they've been banging on about--for the most part fruitlessly--for the last decade and a half. And today it's "Mickey Mouse" degrees. 🙄
Badenoch: Curb students taking 'rip-off' degrees such as English
The performing arts, sociology and anthropology are among the subjects the Conservatives would like to cut

Jenrick being the loudest member of the Conservative party has already been a huge contributor to the poisoning of our politics. We really don't need any four-dimensional chess about him becoming leader. When it happens, it will be a terrible day for our country.
paulbernal.bsky.social
A Tory party under Jenrick might take a few of the racist votes from Reform, but they’d haemorrhage bucketloads to the Lib Dems.

So, on balance…

You have to wonder just what Kemi Badenoch took from Terry Pratchett, because it certainly wasn’t a hatred for the English language, sociology and anthropology.

Tory leader Kemi Badenoch is expected to announce plans to cut the number of UK university places by about 100,000 annually by reintroducing student number controls, reports Patrick Jack #edusky

First three lines and I was transported back to the golden age of Twitter. Thanks, Keith.

Ah well, at least it’s not a roiling pit of lunacy presided over by weird saucer-eyed guys whose understanding of what motivates human beings can best be gauged by the fact that they keep trying to make novelty glasses happen

There will be a lot of this happening right now. I used to write public opinion reports for a company that subcontracted analysis work from various institutions. They’d usually be in touch every couple of months. I haven’t heard from them for over a year. Doesn’t take a genius to understand why.

Yet another Australian Commonwealth Government fiasco: The @Deloitte scandal discredits both this high (taxpayer) paid consultant and AI (artificial intelligence). Before it was cut and paste. Now AI has been exposed making stuff up. False/fraudulent. Elizabeth Knight/SMH 👇

I just want someone to put their hand up and ask Badenoch to explain what anthropologists do.

“I see you looking covetously at The Apparatus. So, you feel you have exhausted the potential of The Benches? You perhaps also scorn The Beanbags? You feel The Hoops somehow beneath you, a trifle for the younger children? No, no my child, you are not ready. Many have aspired; few were called.”

Been to the youngest’s harvest assembly.
Theory: every primary school built pre about 1980 in Britain has some version of this equipment. It is referred to as something like ‘the apparatus’.
No one has any memory of it ever being used.

“Is this a paid ‘opportunity’”
Hi Felicity, Unfortunately, due to our goal of making business more financially accessible, we don’t have a dedicated presenter budget. Despite this, it’s a fantastic extended marketing opportunity where you’d gain great exposure interviewing our headline speakers, including figures like Touker Suleyman, and be featured across our event’s digital channels and marketing materials. It’s an excellent way to build visibility, connect with influential business leaders, and showcase your presenting skills to a large professional audience.

That aside, I wish someone would keep hammering them on the philistinism and hatred of their own country’s culture. Saying British kids shouldn’t study English because it won’t make them money echoes Tice and Candy’s contempt for anything that isn’t their Magic Kingdom Canary Wharf in the emirates.

Maybe they should learn to code instead. Oh, wait…..

Sunder makes me feel optimistic. I greatly admire and appreciate his patient, methodical, implacable approach to tackling racism in the face of immense provocation. He does all pluralists a service, and it’s great that people beyond social media will be able to read about his work. A real mensch.

Very interesting. Given the glut of conjoints in polisci over the last few years, I have been wondering whether survey professionals have become wise to the idea, at least to the extent that when they encounter one they immediately look for the manipulation

How common are “survey professionals” - people who take dozens of online surveys for pay - across online panels, and do they harm data quality?

Our paper, FirstView at @politicalanalysis.bsky.social, tackles this question using browsing data from three U.S. samples (Facebook, YouGov, and Lucid):
