41. Second appearance for Giacometti here, this time a more recent Tate Modern exhibition. This book covers a lot, including a wonderful A-Z. I love the way his sculpture changes as you move around the space. And the cat. I will always love the cat. #52ArtBooks25
Front cover of book. Giacometti. Full-cover image of Giacometti sitting down, surrounded by his sculptures of tall, thin people. Page of book. Two viewpoints of 'Thin bust on a base (known as' Amenophis') 1954. Plaster. Man pointing. Bronze sculpture. 1947 Spoon Woman 1927. In Giacometti's studio.

They're building houses on the field next to school and I get reminded of a classic 80s playground every day 😁
View of building site through fences and gates with a large mound of earth and about 20 concrete tunnels.

I figured that'd be the case for this one. Thought I might as well mention them in case you're looking for other stuff in the future and it fits the bill.

A paper in Nature Communication reports on a new method to produce strong, biodegradable plastic from bamboo. The bioplastic resembles oil-based plastics in strength, shapeability, and thermal stability but can biodegrade in soil within 50 days. go.nature.com/4h1xv0X 🧪
This is figure 5, which shows processability and formability of BM-plastics for diverse products.

By integrating sharia law into our legal system? Not bothering with democracy?

We must emulate the United Arab Emirates, apparently.

Where to even start...?

Finished facilitating the first part of the OLEVI Power of Coaching course to our Growing Leaders cohort this evening. Hopefully they'll all opt to complete the course (this was just an intro and upskilling) 🤞

If you've not already got it on the radar, and ever wanted something outside the city centre with a historical slant, the Framework Knitters Museum in Rudd does room hire for less frameworkknittersmuseum.org.uk/chapel-hire/ (St Peters Rooms with the Village Museum would too)

The Chapel is a popular space for many of Ruddington’s community groups, including various dance and fitness classes.

I'm very into the idea of scientific deduction to work things like this out. I'm not sure of poison either, but I wonder if it's the same sort of ripple as clinking glasses. Only one way to find out, of course... #science

😁 Perhaps not there then...

I know Nottingham Contemporary are plugging their room hire more. Not sure how far that ticks the historical or reasonably priced boxes, but capacities and prices are on their website.

@bendorgrosvenor.bsky.social @januszczak.bsky.social Listened to the latest podcast episode on the way to work & thought 'Clearly Bacchus is in danger of a T-Rex attack, how have they not realised that?' Then I clocked the still carafe wine & realised you're pros & must've ruled that out already.

There was an interesting shift in Haninge this year - lots more Swedish speaking sessions. It'll be interesting to see how the changes you mention come through in that forum.

Sweden is undergoing a clash between evidence and ideology in education. I’ve launched a Substack — The Science of Learning in Sweden— to report for international readers on how SoL meets progressive ideas and a profit-driven system. open.substack.com/pub/jlindero...

40. This is a book we bought in the V&A sale for £2 and I've not properly looked at it til now - it's brilliant! It's a book of prints and posters by artists from Africa and the African diaspora and divided into sections covering place, history, memory, identity and protest. #52ArtBooks25
Front cover of book. In Black and White: Prints from Africa and the Diaspora. Cover is a blue print of two shillouetted figures dancing on a beach. Etchings by Tony Phillips. The History of the Benin Bronzes. Maria Magdelena Campos-Pons, Untitled. Colour photogravure on handmade paper of the artist's back layered with images of eyes. Kara Walker, Freedom: a fable... Laser cut popout shillouetted in a book of woman lying under a palm tree.

It's an actual riddle. Like a mystical quest being all 'If you travel under the full moon, you can only sit on an odd numbered seat, but if you offer your seat to a small dog* you may eat a croissant.

*small† dogs are only allowed to travel on Mondays

†small refers to ear size‡

‡in furlongs"

I thought MSE would be the sort of place to have that, but in all the reams of information and links to different options (exemplifying our tremendous ticketing system) the peak bits are the only bits without links. The best is the split ticketing part that offers a vague rule 🤦‍♀️
Train peak times are usually before 10am and between 4pm and 7pm. Yet if a long train journey starts during peak time, even if a portion of it's outside peak time and you return outside peak time, you still pay peak-time price for the whole journey.

Modern life's clearly influencing my interpretation. Going through sources on Raphael's death and I can't help but read Marcantionio Michiel's diary as if it's a rambling Trump SM post 😶

Tbh, I reckon SM in the days after Raphael's death would've been wild.

Diary of Marcantonio Michiel,
6 April 1520
Shearman, J. (2003) Raphael in Early Modern Sources 1483–1602, 2 vols,
New Haven, CT and London, Yale University Press, vol. 1, p. 572,
translation by K. Christian.
[Michiel was a Venetian nobleman and art enthusiast who was living
temporarily in Rome at the time of Raphael’s death.]
Raphael of Urbino most excellent painter and architect of the church of St. Peter’s has died, to the great sorrow of everyone and of the Pope, who had sent someone many times to visit him. He was a young man of 34, and he left 3,000 ducats in cash behind, and houses, property in Urbino, and the house where he lived that he bought for 3,000 ducats, therefore altogether 16,000 ducats. All men of letters are grieving his death, since he never finished the description and survey of ancient Rome that he was working on, which was indeed a wonderful thing […] He died at the 3 hour after sunset on Holy Friday, with Saturday coming, the day of his birthday.

Tbh, the whole anti-migrant rhetoric is already making my friends on ILR look at moving.

Of course, they’re all the ones with the money and talent *to* move. Which isn’t what politicians are selling as the consequence of ILR-bashing. But it’s what will happen.
The 10 year wait for Indefinite Leave to Remain will make the UK very unattractive for high skilled workers who often have alternatives. 2019 data (excluding the NHS and universities) shows that high skilled workers on visas are heavily concentrated in multinationals who can move jobs abroad (5/x)
