More bikes… less cars.
Maybe this is why so many drivers are aggressive and angry as they sit and sloooowly make their way through downtown Biddeford.
“The United States, with its enormous highways, sprawling suburbs and neglected public transport systems, is one of the most car-dependent countries in the world. But this arrangement of obligatory driving is making many Americans actively unhappy, new research has found.”

How extreme car dependency is driving Americans to unhappiness
A car is often essential in the US but while owning a vehicle is better than not for life satisfaction, a study has found, having to drive too much sends happiness plummeting

Major street safety redesign/bike improvements for Jersey City

🚨 On the September Council agenda, we’re putting forward a big redesign for major streets including bike lanes/safety:

• Summit/Baldwin (Wards C/D)
• MLK/Ocean Ave (Wards A/F)

If you think Amsterdam managed to avoid being overrun by cars, you’re wrong.

They also surrendered their streets to cars for many decades.

But the people fought back, and forced leaders to see their mistake.

There's nothing magical about #Amsterdam.

They just saw their mistake, and changed it.

In Bloomberg CityLab, I explained why cities must build cycling *networks* – not just lanes.

It’s a lesson that many elected leaders have yet to learn (esp Ontario’s Doug Ford, who is taking a sledgehammer to Toronto's cycling network).

🧵
Why the Best Bike Lanes Always Get Blamed
A standoff over cycling infrastructure and traffic congestion in Toronto shows why building protected bike lanes on essential corridors draws controversy along with riders.

In reality, urban cyclists are just regular folks who decided to travel by bike. Many, many more people will make that decision if a city provides high-quality infrastructure.
It's one of my constant refrains: We need leaders who understand that "cyclists" are not a fixed constituency but that "cycling" is a thing that should be cultivated.
A personal pet peeve: Politicians and car owners who talk about “cyclists” as though they’re a distinct human species.

Is there ANY city in the world that has had the opposite experience? Meanwhile in Berlin the conservative city government keeps scrapping existing plans for expanding the inner-city bike-lane network.
It’s REALLY important that #Vancouver’s Downtown Business Association, who were originally against downtown bike-lanes, are now among their most vigourous supporters, because of the evidence that they are better for downtown business than any street parking they replaced.

Bike-lanes mean business.
