The Spirit from January 13, 1946. Pencils by John Spranger, inks by Will Eisner and Bob Palmer, with letters by Martin deMuth.
The cover has one large panel on the top half, and three small panels on the bottom. In the top one is a logo for "The Spirit" in large block letters. Commissioner Dolan is standing on the back of the large "S" and smoking his pipe. He says "I suppose many of you have often wondered who the Spirt is behind his mask...and how he came to be." In the subsequent panels he goes on "lotta you older folks will no doubt remember Dennis Colt, the famed criminologist of the late nineties -- broke up several big gangs. When he died his son, young Dennis, followed in his footsteps. Well, since my only child was a daughter, he sort of became a son to me and I helped him in his career of criminology. One night I was sitting in my office brooding over the case of Dr. Cobra, who was responsible for poisoning two European cities...he was at large in Central City...suddenly... And then the first page ends.
