This checks out. Walked by the PDX ICE building today on way to doc appt. Saw 10 reporters and 6 demonstrators, two of whom were blowing bubbles 😅

(Doc appt btw was a routine derm 5-yr check up because I have family history of basal cell carcinoma and have the privilege of having health insurance)

Oregon National Guard Adjutant General, General Gronewold says if they are federalized, that he will advise the Title 10 commander to utilize National Guard Troops to PROTECT protesters at ICE facilities. This is the right answer.

Very happy to share our new paper in Biological Psychiatry, showing that Urolithin A reverses high anxiety by repairing mitochondrial function in the nucleus accumbens.

Big kudos to first co-authors David Mallet & Doğukan Ülgen, our amazing team, and collaborators!

I know the news is tough right now.

So take a moment and soak in the gorgeousness & promise of the science that led to this year’s Nobel Prize in Medicine & Physiology.

WOW.

Even more informative for me is that Tolstoy, Chekhov, Proust, James Joyce and Virginia Woolf never won the Nobel in literature, and don’t get me started on Mahatma Gandhi never winning the peace prize despite being nominated 5 times

BREAKING: Immergut has *granted* Oregon and California's motion to block the new call-up of Guard troops to Portland. She says this effort to bring CA and TX troops to Oregon is in "direct contravention" of her oroginal order.

A lot of people think that every international student admitted means one fewer spot for domestic students, when the opposite is more likely true - the tuition revenue international students bring allows public universities to provide substantial discounts to domestic students, improving access.

A spatially resolved transcriptomic atlas of the primate amygdala (human, macaque, and baboon) now out in Science Advances (www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...). The amygdala contains 32 types of neurons with many neuron types specific to particular subdivisions.

Lots of updates from the preprint!

Specialized cell types and links to psychiatric disorders are revealed by genetic mapping of primate amygdala neurons.

We're going to see a lot of bullshit in the coming days and weeks about "causes of autism", and most will be based on flawed, over-interpreted observational studies (1/n)

Legend David Baltimore died yesterday. He understood the way things should work: "the real contribution of MIT is that it doesn't take itself too seriously. It takes ideas seriously, but the people are relatively informal. They are not self-aggrandizing the way academics can be."

Sad. Don’t know what coverage is like in the US but here’s the BBC.
At the end of the first set, President Trump was booed much louder than earlier when he appeared on the jumbotron.
The camera lingered for much longer than it usually does on famous faces, too.
The reception from the New Yorkers was markedly different when rock icon Bruce Springsteen - a local hero from New Jersey - appeared to euphoric cheers.
Trump sat stony-faced as Springsteen, who has been a vocal critic of the president, grinned.

You all sound like you have not sat on dean’s tenure committees arguing with folks from Math, economics, and English departments. Just write a strong letter if the applicant is deserving and don’t whine about it
