Every day on the internet makes it abundantly clear that some people have never had a single person turn around and say to them, ‘Cite your sources’ because, and I say this with every ounce of love I can muster as a teacher: while you are entitled to your opinion, that does not make it fact.

Hey All: Google is pulling the "automatically on for anyone over 18" bullshit with Gemini that the Dropbox did for its AI, but I can't afford to ditch Google Drive/Docs/Workspace.

If you have a personal Google Account, first go to gemini.google.com/extensions and turn everything off...

I love how different sff authors do their worldbuilding differently. Tolkien relies heavily on linguistics. NK Jemisin has an excellent grasp of earth science and geology as well as class and racial dynamics. Vance and Le Guin are sociologists who build sprawling societies you can lose yourself in.

likewise linguistics: we have a lot of science about what pronouns are and how they work, and we need to get extremely on the same page about communicating that to non-linguists
Sooooo if this whole "biological sex" EO is really happening, biologists are going to make as much noise about it as possible, right?

Professional societies, universities, individual research groups? It's really incumbent on us (that's a "biologists us" here) to make a BIG FUCKING STINK

Don’t be glum about the long, cold winter. Look around: the trees are busy, not sleeping. When the temperature permits, cells in this bud are dividing, maturing into flowers, leaves, stems. The cambium, maker of all the trees, is preparing for its spring festivities. Be like a tree: keep growing.
