Douthat argues that a party should respond to electoral defeat by moving closer to the center and by default the other party's line.
But this is famously not what the GOP did in ... 2024. Or in 2016.
Nor did Reagan moderate the GOP platform in 1980.
And FDR did nothing of the kind in 1932.

i think i would honestly find this whole discourse more tolerable if people simply said what they were actually saying, which is that they think the Democratic Party is too associated with femininity (and secondarily, with black people) and that they want to correct this
