Dem voters are going to spin their wheels calling for Schumer to resign while whoever would take over for him would do the exact same things he's done. The. same. things. The rot is pervasive.

I don't think it's cowardice. I think that they are OK with what the GOP is doing. The sooner folks reconcile with this, the better.

UBI has to become a reality in America sooner rather than later and this article is a good explanation of why.

So, even if Kamala Harris ran the centrist campaign of their dreams featuring police officers, Liz Cheney, no Palestinians, and a pledge to build the most lethal military in the world she did it Black-ly and woman-ly so actually it was a “far left” campaign.

If you are a Democratic senator watching these results and the lesson you take is "I should cave and help Republicans reopen the government for nothing more than a promise written on toilet paper" then you shouldn't be in the Senate anymore
These big wins will embolden Dems to take on Trump's lawbreaking and show there's a price for GOP enabling of him. Folks hate to hear this, but normal patterns are asserting themselves: Liberalism isn't dead, Rs are likely to lose in 2026, and Trump is really unpopular, not a magical exception.

Douthat argues that a party should respond to electoral defeat by moving closer to the center and by default the other party's line.

But this is famously not what the GOP did in ... 2024. Or in 2016.

Nor did Reagan moderate the GOP platform in 1980.

And FDR did nothing of the kind in 1932.

An even better rule of thumb is to never do what your political and ideological opponents say you should. That alone should be enough for Dems to ignore Douthat's advice here.

But in addition to being intellectually dishonest about 2024, he's also staggeringly wrong about US politics.

I'm asked all the time about the cost of universal basic income and often reply that the lack of UBI isn't free and that poverty actually costs us trillions of dollars a year that we pay for in all kinds of ways instead of UBI. Well, here's a study showing the lack of UBI also costs 9 years of life.
How Income Matters for Longevity
According to research, older adults in the lowest 20% of income die 9 years earlier than their wealthier peers. And 80% of households with older adults—or 47 million—are financially struggling or are ...

I think the problem is when people immediately leap to grace, or talking about grace

when we're still at the 'they're a nazi' stage.
This is in response to me saying that whether someone receives grace is contingent on how hard they work to earn it, and that regardless anyone who has been even a little Nazi-curious at any point in their lives should be permanently barred from office. People on here will say anything.

There will also be a "Taste of Belmont Cragin" centered on Armitage & Grand, next Tuesday from 5-8.

I can't make it, but I think I'm going to make a point of getting to one of these in the next few weeks.
