Like having a flying tag where you just move up and down the terrain without spending that extra movement and you aren't effects by terrain or something would make SO much more sense.

I think Lancer is also a good example of too much Crunch input without meaningful crunch output. Take the flying mechanic. Why do i need to track how many spaces high i am for most of the game? Tracking that number is a little too cumbersome for how little it generally does.

I think that the "mechanics as metaphor" concept helps explain my biggest issue with Lancer? Specifically because of the term "Narrative" used as a non-combat mode. It make the metaphor of it's combat mechanics pointless because it's not "Narrative"
