Those folks up north often use cool whip. Yuck, too sweet and then only a dessert. Civilized Michiganders use mayo to make it a main meal salad.

My mother actually prefers without the marshmallows too, but we've left them in as a nod to my grandmother who started the tradition and liked it with the little ones in there.
