NEW: This was the last essay I was supposed to publish at the Washington Post. But they fired me.

I'm publishing it anyway-- about my family's connection to a sword the British looted from Ghana in 1874.

If youve ever wondered why I love swords, here's why.

The "Return" of the Golden Sword
My grandfather guarded it. The British stole it. I'm named after it—and I'm going to fight for it.

The GOP blames women for undermining them on issues like abortion & ICE & thus hopes to pass the “SAVE Act,” which will make it harder for married women who changed their last names to vote. But they want you to think it’s about “election integrity”. 1/31/26 #HandmaidsTale 1/

Thank the Big Beautiful Bill. New federal work requirements for SNAP begin this week, stripping long-standing exemptions for veterans, foster youth, and some parents. An even greater hunger crisis looms.

I may have a stroke.

Someone said protests don’t belong in church and it took every ounce of self-censure within me not to say “Deborah you are literally a Protestant.”

A PROTESTant.

I assume they think Luther was nailing Bed, Bath, & Beyond coupons to the door.

This is, in my opinion, not only the correct moral/ethical/legal position but also the correct political framing. Everyone can see the agency is out of control; everyone can see that it is constantly violating human rights. "Scrap it and start over" is the moderate position.

LOUDER for the people in the back.
Never forget that billionaires spend billions to convince you that voting doesn't matter. Don't help them. Voting isn't the ONLY thing we can do, but it is the most powerful check on the executive. "Don't bother voting because there'll be no free elections" is oligarch propaganda.

Gonna say it again and until everyone takes me seriously on it:

YOU MUST GET TRAINED IN RAPID RESPONSE NOW.

Not when ICE announces they're coming to your city (PS they're already there).

NOW.

So, what do you do when the banging starts? Do not open the door. I cannot stress this enough. Do not crack it open to "see what they want." Do not step outside to talk. Once that door is open, you have given up your strongest legal protection.

ICE and CBP agents are responsible for the statutory offenses they're committing.

But *just one monster* established the 3,000 arrests/day quota that couldn't possibly be met without turning America into a fascist state.

This is that man. When the tables turn, he'll need to be imprisoned for life.

Kristi Noem calling the victim’s actions “domestic terrorism” is propaganda. Full stop. I served as a White House homeland security advisor. I know what that designation means & when it’s misused. A U.S. citizen is dead. She was a mom. This is what ICE impunity looks like. It cannot be normalized.
This Was Inevitable. And It Is Unforgivable. ICE Owns This.
