Montresor, editor extraordinaire, has arrived to deal with the late episode issue.

Ezracles: It is important for intellectuals to say what is most useful.
Socrates: But is that true?
Ezracles: Certainly I believe it to be true Socrates.
Socrates: But how can I tell you are not just saying that because you think it useful to do so?

Chotiner: so you sat out most of the war because your general took your slavewoman.

Achilles: I proved my point. They couldn’t manage without me.

C: do you think that makes you look better or worse?

A: Well, I did’t kill him. And he brought her back.

C: son of Peleus, thank you for your time.

Chotiner: So you chose to kill your slavewomen as well as the suitors who had taken over your home. Why?

Odysseus: Well, I was in a frenzy understandably, plus they had probably slept with the suitors.

C: Ah. And as slaves did they do this voluntarily?

O: I didn’t ask because

C: They were dead?

Odysseus had his crew lash him to the mast to keep him from doing an interview with Chotiner.

Really cannot recommend Patrick Wyman's podcast Tides of History enough. In addition to pointing me at a ton of great resources for my own work, it's also been useful for both escapism and resetting one's perspective on what we're all living through. It's a Wondery show; easy to find.

Something the man @mikeduncan.bsky.social will tell you at great and entertaining length is how long it takes for revolts to get off the ground, how often they fail, and how hard it is to predict exactly when they’ll pop off. Slowly and then all at once is a good rule.

Progressive taxation including high marginal rates, with a minimum percentage of the yield going to help people: health care, education, safe water and food, low- to no-cost housing, disaster relief, etc.

I'd need help working out the numbers, but, yeah. That.

Scenario: You are the absolute ruler of the world for a few days, and you get to pass one permanent law that will be enforced for all time.

What would it be? 🤔🤔🤔

. . . It's basically a record of one of those conversations where people say what they'd do if they were absolute ruler of the world, except one of the people is Socrates and he keeps asking about shoemakers, for some reason. Listen now wherever you get podcasts! podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/b...

Now you. The pettier and weirder, the better. Plato and Socrates would be proud.

We asked BoAT-AC (the Books of All Time Advisory Council) and other listeners for their takes. Some highlights:

Beck C. would tax billionaires into thousandaires and use their money to retrofit society with green infrastructure—except for a few houses in which the ex-billionaires would live.

It's time to think about thinking, fam. The first of our three-episode series on Plato's Republic (c. 380 BCE) is in feeds now! This philosophical dialogue, which interrogates morality and the just society, is the founding document of Western political theory . . . #booksky #philosophy #podcasts

Really fun thread about how human language is (surprise) set up to ensure effective transmission through oral culture!
