The logic of "Democrats shouldn't stand up for trans rights because it will hurt them in elections" makes no sense. There are NO voters who are ready to vote for Democrats but decide not to because they just can't get on board with support for trans rights. Those people are Republicans.

If Dems bravely stand up for what's RIGHT without fear of offending right-wing bigots who will never vote for them anyway, they inspire young/marginalized people who don't normally participate in politics to show up & vote. That's what Mamdani is doing, and he's the most popular Dem in the US today.

On the flip side, there are a LOT of voters who are disillusioned by politics but might vote for Democrats if they felt like Democrats were actually brave and principled and ready to stand up for people who are in danger from Republican authoritarian rule and the violent bigots who are enabled by it

I hate to say it but the majority of the country is not going to die on the hill of trans rights. We can’t protect ANY groups if we can’t win a national election, so purity tests only serve to make specific groups feel triumphant. That’s not “erasing” them; it’s long-horizon strategy.
