My friend and colleague Wesley Morris and I had a very sobering conversation about America since the 1619 Project published and how it feels to be falling back under the veil that W.E.B. Du Bois so mournfully wrote about. I hope you’ll listen to this episode of Cannonball @nytimes.com

Crowdfunding, second jobs, credit card debt. This is how teachers are stocking their classrooms to serve students during a period of economic uncertainty. 19thnews.org/2025/08/teac...
Teachers are spending more and more on school supplies. Here's why.
As prices soar and family contributions shrink, America's teachers are footing the bill, spending hundreds — sometimes thousands — of their own dollars on school supplies.

A masterclass review
Only a great critic can go into a movie as drecky as FREAKIER FRIDAY and emerge with a review as expansive, considered, and thoughtful — not just about the movie, but about the industry that produced it — as the incomparable @szacharek.bsky.social does here: time.com/7308212/frea...

Undocumented immigrants can’t enroll in Medicaid. They can only ever access it temporarily, when they need lifesaving medical care.

This only makes people afraid to access the medical care they’re legally allowed to receive.

But Trump doesn’t care. His only goal is to sow fear.

Gerrymandering is bad actually

And anyone, even governors, who are proposing this are playing a dangerous game that’ll further undermine democracy and further the race to the bottom of fascism

To review what we from @washingtonpost.com are reporting out of the IRS today:

every person involved in this needs to be in prison
“One young man sobbed when a guard pushed him to the floor. He said, ‘I’m not a gang member. I’m gay. I’m a barber.’ I believed him. *** He “began to whimper,” as his head was roughly shaved, “folding his hands in prayer as his hair fell.” He “asked for his mother & cried as he was slapped again.”

I feel like the pop. support for this comes from the idea that modern teachers are overburdened by ‘woke’ curricular rules. I’ve heard so much from parents who “can’t imagine teaching now.” But the attacks are coming from these ghouls, over and over. They made a fake crisis solved by fake history.
