“Moments of genuine crisis require leaders willing to make tough choices. Cities that build housing do so because they declare it a top priority and align their institutions accordingly. Cities that hedge and delay quietly sabotage themselves” @jessezwick.bsky.social

Contributor: Los Angeles is sabotaging itself on housing
The city's chronic housing shortage is not for lack of technical capacity or earnest speeches but due to political leaders’ ambivalence toward a remedy.

CAPITAL PROJECTS DASHBOARD 🔨💡

It's hard to track what the City is working on when it comes to capital projects (city roads, sidewalks, buildings, facilities, etc.) so we built a dashboard for you all to know!

Finally, here's the piece I wrote breaking the story.
LA has stopped repaving our streets
The reason why is probably illegal

Careful planning: on Eagle Rock Blvd., the city repaved an 1/8-mile length but split it into two unconnected patches to avoid triggering HLA and installing protected bike lanes. The patches stop just before the intersection to avoid triggering the ADA and installing updated curb ramps.

I wanted to show the human cost of the city stopping repaving. Here are two LA streets that show how far the city will go to avoid keeping us safe, one by negligence and one by careful planning.

LA desperately needs structure reform to Public Works. siloed departments, obfuscated leadership, and oscillating budgets are eroding our largest public assets

this wont be fixed without a charter reform, CIP implementation, and probably a new dedicated infrastructure fund
LA has surrendered to the potholes: @michaelschneider.com and I have a piece in the LA Times today about how the city has stopped repaving our streets. (Also thank god for great headline writers at actual newspapers!)

To avoid a legal obligation to make sidewalks accessible, the city stopped repaving streets in July and doesn't plan to resume.

Yes, the city needs to actually repave streets. Yes, the city needs to repair sidewalks. Yes, the city needs to install curb ramps.

But the bigger problem is that when LA decides to do anything at all to "help" pedestrians, the result looks like this complete and utter bullshit

I wrote something with @futureis about how LA has basically stopped maintaining its streets.

At this rate, the city is going to be one big pothole in a few years, and we’re going to spend more on settling lawsuits than fixing streets.

Our city is not only doing close to zero street maintenance, but they’re also slow walking Measure HLA implementation as a result.

Very sad state of affairs. This isn’t what the voters voted for.

City traffic engineers are evil geniuses.

At this point, everyone is on to their violent ideology and voters are ordering them to make streets safe when they re-pave.

But you know what traffic engineers are doing instead?

They're saying "Oh, we're not re-paving. We're just repairing."

The Second Story, AKA author Hilary Layne, recently put out a video claiming that the fall of modern writing and storytelling can be traced to fanfiction. That the process of writing fanfiction has utterly ruined...everything.

I want to set the record straight.
