Ok so do we do a profile post thing here? Personal stuff is in my actual profile, minus a listing a few other interests or seems like everyone else here likes (books, science, long walks on the beach etc). Maybe I'll just post a few art pieces instead? Details in alt text.

I've read a fair number, they're fascinating!

That's it. When I was doing full time graphic design professionally, I never made anything for fun. Working for Dynamix/Sierra pretty much ruined me for video games. I need to keep fun and work separate. It's def not that way for everyone

I was very invested in the first generations of creator owned comics in the late 70s and 80s as a kid/teen, vertigo and epic and all the indie imprints, and their business was always totally fucked, it was obviously a death trap business to me so I avoided it. I could have been a colorist easily imo

Yeah I ran away from game design/development and then live music production and design/marketing after seeing the dark underbelly of each. Turns out i prefer working in a non-artistic field and saving creativity for private time

No, not at all. I've never tried a script

Positive but mixed just because he's so prolific. But that book's great, and Transmetropolitan sits on my all time top shelf. A really prolific working writer should just be judged by their best work, not the stuff they do to pay the bills, so he gets my thumbs up for sure

I'm not saying it's not good. I like plenty of things that sank without a trace. Hell, I'm a SF comic collector, that's the most niche shit there is

Yes. This is what it really comes down to: writing that captures the best qualities of Trek is simply hard to do, and requires breaking convention. That's the crux of it. But that's also why it's so beloved when it works

It's not a unique idea, it runs all thru SF. But it's a good idea that hasn't been done well in TV/ streaming/ film

Totally. Business wise it was a failure. What a weird meta retcon to imagine it as a success worth rebooting

Hell you could basically steal half your plot lines from Iain Banks since it seems like no one will ever move forward with a Culture adaptation. Let future Fed starship AIs become Banks style Minds and see where that goes; the ships become characters themselves!

Especially given that the modern fandom is like 93% people who would take all the Luxury Space Communist Utopianism you have and come back for seconds! Yes, you have to get the casting right, and that's huge. But the core tonality of TOS was optimistic/curious and people now would *eat that up*
