Threatening to withhold funds Massachusetts sends to the federal government unless Massachusetts complies with the federal government raises a serious, legitimate question:

Why does Massachusetts need a federal government?
Last week, Boston received a letter from AG Bondi threatening to prosecute officials and withhold funds unless we cooperate with carrying out mass deportations.

The US Attorney General asked for a response by today, so here it is: stop attacking our cities to hide your administration’s failures.

It is very difficult to think that we should give up public broadcasting, investments in science and innovation, and affordable college - things that New England can do on its own by clawing back federal funding.

The only alternative to a #NationalDivorce is to do stuff like this. Gerrymandering is bad, but it is a weapon we have to use to stop authoritarianism.
We can play too.

The alternative to partition (the so-called #NationalDivorce) amounts to a new constitution, which is only possible with these kinds of heavy tactics. I'm not opposed to this. It would be uncomfortable to root for gerrymandering, but the alternatives are worse.

@billmckibben.bsky.social penned this and I could not have said it better myself:

"I’d much prefer the former. I love our vast country precisely for its geographical and cultural diversity. But if that’s not going to be our story, I’m also content to live a New England life."

A common refrain about secession is that it's "abandonment," but the truth is that New England has stronger economic and cultural ties to Canada than it does to many parts of the U.S., but no one says we abandoned Quebec in the revolution.
