The Bead Society of Great Britain, (formed in September 1989), is a subscription-based, non-profitmaking, non-commercial venture run by a permanent Team who work voluntarily.

The Society is open to all those who have an appreciation, either private or professional, of beads ancient and modern, of all shapes, sizes, materials and colours; their techniques of manufacture, and their application.

The aim of our Society is to encourage and share knowledge and enjoyment of every type of bead, to improve the accuracy of information and the skills of making, using, caring for and collecting beads, together with the understanding of the many peoples for whom beads are so important in their lives.

Members receive three issues per year of the highly-acclaimed Journal

The Society currently holds two-three meetings each year - lectures/workshops and an AGM. We have a varied program of courses, meetings and workshops, most are FREE to members.

The Society numbers among its members private collectors, researchers, dealers, jewellery makers, bead embroiderers, beadwork weavers (on and off-loom), makers of beads, and many others, so there's a place for everyone!

What's on the bead board at the moment you ask? More hot air balloon earrings for the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta lol 🙌! I really do enjoy making these 🥰.

A beading board filled with some of my current projects: hot air balloon earrings in different styles and designs along with their matching loose delica beads. There is also a random blue and white star that was a tester for Dallas Coyboys earrings. It's just chilling though because the sale fell through. *sad noises*

Look closely at the hem and you can spot a later alteration where it was raised. It hints at a second life, passed on, adjusted, worn again, a reminder that most wardrobes were thrifty and social lives were busy.

Upper side‑bodice detail with contrasting black and clear beadwork in repeating horizontal lines; slight puckering from the gathered drop‑waist construction can be seen. Shoulder and armhole detail with dense beading in geometric bands; some net repairs and fraying at the edge are visible, showing the dress’s age and use.

Colchester’s nights out were changing in the 1920s. Dance halls, assembly rooms and the new cinemas drew mixed crowds, and young people went out without a chaperone. This beaded chiffon dress belonged to that world.
Full-length view of a 1920s sleeveless dress in pale yellow silk crepe chiffon. The straight, drop‑waist silhouette is covered with horizontal bands of black and clear glass beadwork, including Greek‑key and Egyptian‑influenced motifs. Areas of wear and past shortening are visible along the hem.

Thousands of tiny black and clear beads caught the glow of electric light while a straight, drop-waisted cut made the foxtrot and Charleston easier than in earlier corseted styles.
Detail of the lower bodice showing rows of small square beads forming loops and diamond patterns on translucent chiffon; the texture of the beads and the softness of the fabric are clearly visible.

Fascinating world of ancient #glass: a #Roman bracelet made of turquoise and dark blue glass beads. They are imitating beads made of the lapis lazuli and turquoise, semi-precious stones mined in Afghanistan and Egypt.

Did Archaeologists Find Western Europe's Oldest Shell Jewellery Workshop?

SAINT-CÉSAIRE, FRANCE, 26/9/25 ~ A multi-institutional research team working at the prehistoric site of La-Roche-à-Pierrot in Saint-Césaire identified the oldest known shell jewellery workshop in western Europe, according to a statement released by the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). Excavations uncovered a number of pierced shells as well as yellow and red pigments. However, it was the absence of wear marks and the presence of unperforated shells that led archaeologists to believe the site was used to manufacture finished products from raw materials. The shells came from the Atlantic coast, which was around 60 miles away at the time, while the pigments were sourced from a site at least 25 miles away. This attests to significant human mobility and long-distance trade networks established by the artefacts’ creators. The site dates to between 55,000 and 42,000 years ago, a period that experts associate with the so-called Châtelperronian culture, which inhabited parts of France and northern Spain. This was a significant transitional era in Western Europe when Neanderthals were in the process of being replaced by Homo sapiens. The researchers are not certain who exactly made the shell jewellery, but note the evidence indicates that Châtelperronian people may have been influenced by—or may even have been part of—a very early group of Homo sapiens who moved into the region

🧪🦣🏺 This is v cool and also not v surprising to me, since we have apparent interest in green colour in #Neanderthals, and also green malachite beads in Late Upper Palaeolithic (around the same time as this azurite) at Shanidar Cave.
Origins material & colour aesthetics are deep and shared!

Time to update your Palaeolithic palettes... 🔵

Very proud to share our new research on the OLDEST use of blue pigment! We identified traces of azurite - a vibrant blue mineral - on a stone object around 14-13,000 years old. Why is this so exciting? 👇🏺

Close-up image of a sand coloured stone, with a diagonal crack. The sand rock has a textured surface, and small spots of blue can be seen towards the centre of the stone. The background is grey. Microscopic photo of the blue spots, that are irregular in shape and size and positioned diagonally across the image. The rest of the photo shows the rough sand coloured texture of the stone.
