My candid thoughts on the death of Charlie Kirk.

As a Muslim, I’ve received an onslaught of hate from Kirk supporters who believed his disinformation about Islam and Muslims. Yet, I do not rejoice in his death. At all. So why have empathy for those who show none?

The 100 lowest-paying US corporations spent $644B on stock buybacks from 2019 to 2024.

Buybacks artificially boost share prices and inflate CEO pay.

The typical worker at these companies earned $35k last year.

Meanwhile, the average CEO was paid $17.2M

See the problem?

Taps the sign

The institutions of this economy depend on the institutions of this democracy.
You can repeat this for almost any issue:

It's of course true that US democracy can survive {improper pressure on the Fed, changes to executive branch staffing, spending disputes with Congress, etc.} in normal times.

But we have an authoritarian president trying to consolidate autocratic control!
An ongoing issue in Trump II is people's insistence on evaluating every action in isolation.

It's of course true that US democracy can survive a partisan mid-decade redistricting under normal circumstances.

But we have an authoritarian president trying to consolidate autocratic control!

Also, let’s remember how those quarters came to be vacant.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem is living for free in a military home typically reserved for the U.S. Coast Guard's top admiral.

The highly unusual arrangement has raised concern from officials, who describe it as a waste of military resources. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...

A DHS spokesman said Noem must live on the military base because she had been “so horribly doxxed and targeted that she is no longer able to safely live in her own apartment.”

It would be very easy for ICE to make clear who its officers are and to display valid law enforcement creds. They’re choosing not to, to intimidate and spread fear. This is not how law enforcement should operate in a free society.

NEW: National Guard troops deployed to DC by President Trump are now preparing to carry weapons.

It's a significant shift—defense officials emphasized two days ago that troops would not be armed or have weapons in their vehicles.

Thank you.
Fascism is here. We are not “getting closer” or “in danger of.”

This matters because it frames our discussion: We aren’t trying to prevent it, we’re trying to defeat it. It’s not taking over our institutions, it’s taken them over.

Otherwise, we’re always behind, fighting a past we’ve already lost.

Well, I’m gonna insist that you listen to this.

Definition of terms:

“these people” = Latino migrants

“Inner city people” = Black people

“We tried to get them [inner city people] to do it” = slavery & sharecropping
Trump on undocumented farm workers: "People that live in the inner city are not doing that work. They've tried, we've tried, everybody tried. They don't do it. These people do it naturally. Naturally ... they don't get a bad back, because if they get a bad back, they die."
