You might think the answer is obviously "yes" or "what a stupid question, there are lots of fantastical animals in Lord of the Rings". Please, pause for a moment and consider the question's other meaning. In Lord of the Rings are their animals that, within the story are not real but only fantastical. For example, dragons in reality are fantastical and I thing made-up creatures are a universal feature of human societies. So do Hobbits and humans in Middle Earth have in their culture creatures that are just made up?

I was stuck on a train the other day and, as it was available on Netflix, decided to watch Star Trek: Enterprise. That led to the question "does this get better?" So, I watched several more episodes and the answer was "no, not really." I watched the first eight episodes. I only watched the opening titles once and vowed never again would that theme song afflict my ears. I get there is a kind of plot logic with the show that given its setting (human spaceship, pre-federation, captain with a chip on his shoulder etc) that means the character and culture of the Enterprise has to contrast with later versions of Trek.
