The “Debate Me Bro” Grift: How Trolls Weaponized The Marketplace Of Ideas
Among the attempts to create hagiographic eulogies of Charlie Kirk, I’ve seen more than a few people suggest that Kirk should be respected for being willing to talk to “those who disagree with him” as a sign that he was engaging in good faith. Perhaps the perfect example of this is Ezra Klein’s silly eulogy claiming that Kirk was “

“We see real danger in this moment,” the letter states. “We hold diverse political beliefs, but we are united as researchers in wanting to protect independent scientific inquiry. We are sending this SOS to sound a clear warning: the nation’s scientific enterprise is being decimated.”

As mind-numbingly stupid as this all is, perhaps the stupidest part is all of his party going along with the mad king like it's normal. Congress could end these tariffs before they start, but the whole party has gone stupid.
Incredibly, this appears to be true. We tariffed our own (jointly operated with the UK) military base.
We tariffed BIOT, Mike.

BIOT. Diego fucking Garcia.

We tarrifed our own military base.

Important point here: they are not firing public officials to save money - personnel costs are relatively minor - they want to kneecap capacity so that these agencies struggle to spend money. Its a back door impoundment.
Wondering why all the administrators got fired yesterday?

It's so there will be nobody to issue awards or negotiate contracts to undermine Congressional authority to appropriate funds for research.

The federal government are illegally impounding the NIH budget & this serves that effort.
Trump and Musk are trying to block all NIH spending.
Trump and Musk are trying to block all NIH spending.

(Legal aside: so they’re admitting that regulations matter. That’s good.)

Stand up.

Today I join with >1900 members of the US National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine signing this letter, as individuals, decrying the assault on #science by the GOP and Trump administration.

So these “deportations” that the Trump administration carried out to El Salvador…am I understanding that some of these men were detained with no adjudication and now are being imprisoned in a foreign country?

This isn’t just anti-DEI, removing people they think were celebrated only because of their color or gender. It is saying that no matter how truly important one’s achievements, if you aren’t a white male you don’t matter. www.axios.com/local/salt-l...

NOAA and the @nws.noaa.gov have lost 10% of their staff in haphazard cuts over the past week.

A further 10% reduction in force is now planned — this would be catastrophic for the nation's oceans, coasts, weather prediction, climate, and public safety.

Together with recent firings and resignations, the new cuts could hamper the National Weather Service’s ability to produce lifesaving forecasts, scientists say.

NOAA returns/produces so much more money to the American economy than it costs, no stories about any of this should allow them the absolutely bullshit "savings" framing

I worry that the focus on NOAA's weather predicting value is ignoring the millions of other ways NOAA researchers enrich communities and local economies.

There are no oysters without NOAA. There are no blue crabs without NOAA. NOAA trains teachers. NOAA is the lifeblood of coastal communities.

This whole endeavor is infuriating to me, but as an earth scientist I am particularly watching what is happening not only to NSF funding but to NOAA and NASA who are responsible for collecting and distributing incredibly important data that could not be collected by smaller organizations.

Is no one who actually knows what they are doing speaking up to let these people know they are embarrassing themselves with this idiocy? Are they just being ignored? Afraid to speak up?
2. Popular Information has obtained archived versions of most of the deleted publications. Almost all of them are not associated with DEIA topics but appear to have been targeted because they include a DEIA-related keyword used in a completely different context.

Hearing reports that Musk’s cronies are targeting NOAA — infiltrating key systems and locking out career employees.

NOAA is vital for weather forecasting, scientific research and more. Their critical work saves lives.

My team and I are looking into this and we will not stand for it.
