I’m proud to stand next to my fellow Council colleague, Sameer Kanal @kanalforportland.bsky.social, who staffed the Police Accountability Commission that built out the structure voters approved. Years of meetings. Years of amendments. Years of testimony. Years of legal work.

As the former Chair of the Citizen Review Committee, I had the honor of helping write the ballot measure and working on the campaign to pass it. I chaired the CRC through those years of transition and redesign and saw firsthand how much work it would take to build something stronger.

Standing here with Jo Ann Hardesty, the first Black woman elected to Portland City Council, I’m reminded of the courage it took to lead that fight. Jo Ann carried this measure with clarity and conviction. She showed what bold leadership looks like.
