1854年（安政元年）の今日12月24日、伊豆の戸田（現・沼津市戸田）で洋式帆船「ヘダ号」（写真1枚目）の建造開始。
日露和親条約締結のため下田に来航したロシアのプチャーチン提督の船が安政大地震の津波で大破・沈没し、帰国のための船を日露共同で造ることにしたのだ。当時幕府にロシア語の通訳ができる者はおらず、一旦オランダ語にしてから日本語にするという苦労の中、翌3月に進水、プチャーチンら約50名が帰国した。
これが日本初の本格的洋式帆船の造船となる。

You know, because today is #NationalHedhegodDay, did you know that medieval bestiaries say that hedgehogs would roll on their backs to catch grapes and fruit with their quills so they could feed their young?
