Ana broke the story of the right-wing campaign of video game censorship — before the work itself was censored. She's been in this fight for years.

Without outlets willing to report on it, we need to support the work of those who are actually doing it. Give something if you can.
I left VICE in July due to important and valuable work on video game censorship being, well, censored. Since then it's been a bit tough to find steady work outside of my VTubing & VA work. Helping pay for things like rent would allow me to continue to focus on this issue

I have called my Reps so many times and the only question they've ever asked is "Do you happen to know the bill's number?" Like that's it, and even then I only got asked it once. Trust me, calling your reps is one of the least stressful things you can do in these times.
#SaveSpeech

Ive gotten various comments and DMs that some people are too afraid to contact their reps about ID bills etc because they anticipate some kind of retaliation

I need you to understand, it is your RIGHT to call your representative and share your feelings as a constituent on a bill

"Age verification" laws are actually "upload your ID or get your face scanned to access every website, ending anonymity and associating your identity with everything you do online" laws and if more people understood that they would not be down for this authoritarian nonsense

This is the first time I’ve ever seen a social platform say that these child safety (aka anti-porn laws) are bad for everyone.

Governments around the world are “think of children”ing their way into tracking you online and forcing a monopoly of the internet. It’s getting really scary.
bsky.app Bluesky @bsky.app · Aug 22
Unfortunately, Bluesky is unavailable in Mississippi right now, due to a new state law that requires age verification for all users.

While intended for child safety, we think this law poses broader challenges & creates significant barriers that limit free speech & harm smaller platforms like ours.

A lot of people don’t realize that if these laws continue to go unchallenged, Bluesky will effectively struggle to operate as intended — some Twitter users are already theorizing about Bluesky users going back to Twitter, for example
I still talk with some people and they say "pfff its just porn, I don't feel bothered with it" and its shocking how much effort it is to get into their heads that porn was just the easy test, now they can go after EVERYTHING. I'd rather have the internet with all its dangers, but free.

the desire to mass censor by parents is honestly often less about the safety of children and more avoiding the struggle of parenting and the loss of control as a child gains knowledge

You have no idea how annoyed I am that this had to happen the week of my comic release lmao

That said, I'd rather be mad and call this shit out than calcify in my bed and let my career and the career of my friends get shat on

We ain't doomposting out here

You have to defend the right for art and media to be "sexually gratifying"

You have to defend "gratification"

You have to defend the right for people to get off nasty style

You need to be more disgusted with people who want to say what people can do with their own time and money than x or y kink

So Visa and Mastercard have a huge problem with legal adult content "damaging their brand"?

But somehow they dont't have any problem making money from child abuse in Roblox for over a decade (and going).

Truly the right companies to be our moral guardians.

as someone who has trouble with phone calls, this was actually pretty easy. it took me like 15 minutes to look up the bills, write a short script, find my senators and rep's contact info, and make the calls. please call if you can

I used to work for a politician answering their phones and responding to their emails, and I can tell you from my experience this is completely true.
I saw my boss immediately flip on an issue because we got like ten emails in a day. Trust me, they do worry about being flooded with this stuff.
I was told directly by an aide on a call today that when a bill comes before a congressman, they specifically take their data from these calls and say "this is how many/who called in to vote yay/nay for this bill"

they actually do factor in how many people call on issues like these. do your calls!

this is why adult creators are really emphasizing that non-creators be the ones who contact paypal. Of all the paypros, PP is the most likely to act in a retaliatory manner towards individual accounts. If you dont make adult content or youre just a commissioner, you are able to help a LOT
Whenever I've called PayPal and brought up issues with adult content they have always asked me first if I'm engaging in selling it through my account. Paypal wants to know if it can target you when you question its policies.
I like how you, as a NSFW creator, need to seek permission - but doing so obviously puts you on their radar and risks getting shit-canned just for trying to be "legit" about it

if you havent made any calls, or shipped any letters or sent any emails yet, and you feel like its "too late":

dont. its not too late. now is literally a perfect time to start joining in and contacting legislators and paypros in whatever way works best for you.

its a marathon, not a race!
for those of you that have somehow made it this long without ever calling: you literally just have to list the bills. you don't have to give a reason. if you get a person, they won't ask you why. if you get a voicemail, just say your address at the beginning. it took me less than 5 minutes to call 3

I'm seeing fewer posts about the Visa and Mastercard situation, and I want to make it plain as day. You need to keep calling and bothering them and losing them money.

Because if we lose this, they are going to cut more and more from what's available until you can only buy what they approve of.

⬇️
Spoke with an anon source who had an interesting insight into Visa policy. Per a convo with their bank on the Steam/itchio situation today, Visa put new restrictions into place due to a new "government policy." The exact phrase used by Visa. No specific country was listed as the source of the policy

Remember! Petitions are worth signing and sharing around! They communicate our numbers and big numbers scare corpos!
Fight for the Future has a petition set up that to urge Visa and Mastercard to stop censoring games, as well as urge lawmakers to step in against their overreach

Petitions cannot materially do much, but theyre great for communicating raw numbers. Its worth the 60 seconds itll take to sign it.

This is what we mean when we talk about how targetting "porn" inevitably leads to targetting non-pornographic content too, usually media from marginalized demographics

They will never, ever, ever stop at porn, or at taboo sexual content. It is a Trojan horse. ALWAYS.

You don't need to persuade them in the conventional sense. Have you tried reasoning with someone who is power tripping? It doesn't work.

What you do is ruin their experience of trying to exert power over you. Make it an unbearable drag. Make it backfire. Make them prefer to just leave you be.
TLDR; it's in our best interest to keep up the pressure on these companies and be as VOCALLY and VISUALLY annoying as possible.

The goal for average joes like you and me at this juncture is BRAND DAMAGE. Stay loud, stay annoying, connect their effect on free expression with their brand
