Casual reminder that the myth of “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” is a cruel hoax designed to convince poor people from all walks of life that the injustices they face are a result of their own actions, rather than an oppressive system rigged against them.

“Making incarcerated people pay for communication has a regressive effect on their well-being, on their improvement in prison, and after they are released,” says Wanda Betram, a spokesperson for the Prison Policy Initiative.
Priced Out of Phone Calls Home
The FCC blocked Biden-era limits on the exorbitant rates and fees charged by prison telecom companies, leaving incarcerated people and their families to fight for state-level reforms.

I don’t mean to sound extreme, but I don’t think we should have torture camps for people with criminal records either.

are you outraged? you should be.

but if you’re only outraged at what you perceive happens in El Salvador, not in your state…or if you’re only outraged at the GOP…

it’s unsettling how many USians seem to think CECOT is unlike that prison your uncle works at in Colorado or Virginia or California or Alabama…

humiliation, deprivation, isolation, sexual violence…constant torture inflicted on people who both have & have not committed harm—that’s…prison.

When you’re in your 20s, you’ll walk by an indie bookshop that you’ve never visited. (Amazon is convenient.) You’ll see their bookseller recs, a cat in the window, & curation & feel the need to go in.

It’s really important that you do, because that indie will be your safe space for years to come.

This is my cyclical reminder that there's really only one consistently reliable source of info in the public record that isn't owned by right wing billionaires, who really want to put an end to it.

Please give at least the $2.75 minimum they request if you can.

Shannon Bird had the most missed votes of any House Democrat and then resigned her seat to run full-time for Congress. She did this while having the worst record in the House for working class Coloradans.

If voters can't see through that, then idk what to tell them.
