The biggest beneficiary of Pontevedra’s pioneering vision has been children, with 80% of kids aged 6 to 12 now walking alone to school each morning. The thriving city has attracted 15,000 new inhabitants, mostly young families from northwest Spain, with the population of kids under 14 growing by 8%.

People of all ages and abilities walk, cycle, sit, and socialise on the car-free streets of Pontevedra, which are lined with buildings, trees, benches, and patios.

Spokes Cargobike support grants for organisations

Thanks to generous donations from our members we are pleased to offer grants to local community organisations (and very small businesses) based in Edinburgh/Lothian to assist with the cost of buying a cargo bike. We also received support for this initiative from the Galashan Trust for a limited period of time, which enabled us to increase grant levels – support from other sources would be welcome!

We may consider second applications from an organisation which has already received a grant, but see see the criteria in the information sheet (below).

Around 2009/10, opponents said London was too hilly, too wet and too old to invest in better streets for cycling. No one would cycle and apparently there wasn’t a “cycling culture”.
