Mississippi's health department told me that, thanks to Trump and Kennedy's evisceration of the CDC, they are no longer collecting data for a national database that has been integral to policymaking on maternal and infant health for nearly four decades.

I'm watching a hearing for South Carolina SB 323, a total abortion ban. Two crying women have begged lawmakers not to pass the bill and talked about struggling to end wanted pregnancies in SC (which bans abortion past 6 weeks). Two men talked about why God requires that abortion be treated as murder

Six years ago, I spent a few days in a Maine Family Planning clinic in a rural corner of the state.

“I honestly don’t know what I would have done if I couldn’t have come here,” one patient told me.

NEW: Maine Family Planning, a key health care provider in Maine, is closing its primary care practice on Oct. 31 because it was kicked out of Medicaid by Trump's Big Beautiful Bill.

This is the same bill that has defunded Planned Parenthood.

From Maine Family Planning's statement:

Because MFP’s primary care practice was modeled to serve Medicaid patients, without Medicaid funds, MFP is no longer able to sustain its vital primary care practice. Over the next 30 days, MFP will work with patients to help identify other primary care providers in the region that are accepting new patients. MFP will continue seeing patients who need family planning care, regardless of insurance status, for as long as we are able.

The basic infrastructures that allow women to be participants in public life—birth control & abortion access, no fault divorce, childcare access & affordability, civil rights law in employment and public accommodations, the minimal efforts to mitigate sexual and domestic violence—are all crumbling.

Trump & RFK's attack on Tylenol is part of an emerging campaign within the right to valorize “natural” pregnancy & motherhood—to the point it corrodes women’s health & safety.

Under this campaign, pregnancy & motherhood are seen as women’s natural states.

Speaking as a reproductive health reporter who covered these referenda endlessly and talked to MANY voters in Kansas, Missouri, and Ohio: Abortion rights are MORE popular than Democrats. They MAKE Democrats popular.

I genuinely cannot believe that Ezra Klein said we should run pro-life candidates in Kansas, Ohio, and Missouri; three states that recently held abortion referendums where the pro-choice side won!

Taking political positions that'll make it more likely to win Senate seats in Kansas and Ohio and Missouri. Trying to open your coalition to people you didn't want it open to before. Running pro-life Democrats.

This new law is sure to escalate the war between states that ban abortion and those that protect it. It's likely only a matter of time before the Supreme Court weighs in on whether red states can go after abortion providers operating out of blue states.

There's SO MUCH going on that I'm sure this news will get lost, but: Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has signed into law a first-of-its-kind bill that lets private citizens to sue abortion providers who ship pills into the state.

Providers basically told me: Bring it on.
