I know statistics are poorly understood and are misused. But facts matter

Between the 1991, 2001, 2011 and 2021 Census *every* ethnic group in the UK has become *less* geographically segregated and *all* groups, majority and minorities, are more likely to interact with people not like them

Also love the annual disregard for time difference that the committees have - the commitment to their own timetable is so reassuring

Whatever you do, please don’t stop reading.

Read for joy. Read for education. Read for resistance. Read banned books. Read books by marginalized authors. Read about experiences that differ from your own.

Just. Keep. Reading.

Historian friends: I have an honors students writing a thesis about needlework samplers by Indigenous girls at mission school in the 1830s. I don't know much about the scholarship on boarding and mission schools in this early period (other than Snyder and Demos). Any thoughts?

Our latest “Document of the Week” was chosen by our Senior Curator, Dr
Charlie Hall. It offers an eyewitness account of conditions in Auschwitz, as
provided by a Jewish doctor who worked in the camp hospital for more
than two years.

A student in my publishing course is interested in researching book pulping and book recycling. Do we know any work or introductory material in this area?

(Work on remainders, print runs, supply chain, raw materials all relevant, too.)

This is a very clear account of how government policy has already reduced access to degrees in History & other SHAPE subjects for members of marginalised communities and how new moves risk making matters worse still.

I was at the Eisenhower Library just last month. All the brilliant staff provided invaluable help for my research.

This move from the Trump administration is shocking but we should not be surprised that anyone who stands up to them, and stands up for history, is seen as a threat 🗃️

Having done research there, I can’t say enough about the professionalism and competency of the staff at the Eisenhower Library and Museum. The fact that a staff member would be fired for doing their job with integrity is outrageous.

Newspaper article from UK Times, 4 April, 1974

‘Universities “Exploiting Students as Cheap Staff”’

from Tim Devlin, Education Correspondent, Liverpool, April 3

Postgraduate students, it was alleged here today, are being exploited as cheap labour by the universities and their ‘appalling’ rates of pay are being used to keep down the wages of other staff, particularly laboratory technicians

A screenshot from Publisher's Lunch:
Jennifer L. Armentrout and Hellmann's
In a promotion designed for BookTok enjoyment, Jennifer L. Armentrout’s just-published THE PRIMAL OF BLOOD AND BONE is available in a special, limited-edition "garlic-scented copy, infused with Hellmann’s Garlic Aioli to create a one-of-a-kind, Craven-proof book." They explain: "This exclusive edition is printed with garlic-infused ink, designed to ward off Armentrout’s bloodthirsty monsters, the Craven. While humans may dread garlic breath, Hellmann’s has cleverly transformed this social faux pas into an unexpected – and delicious – form of supernatural protection."

I am sick to death of the “50% of UK school leavers go to university” nonsense floating around.

The highest it’s EVER been is 38%, in 2021, and it’s currently lower.

Man, I'm sorry, but reading all these AI generated essays from students, it just sucks all the joy out of everything. It's exhausting, makes you into a weird paranoid cop, grinds you down, wastes your time, makes you feel like shit about everything.

Fuck this shit technology and all its enablers.
