Today is #NationalTattooDay. Zookeeper Erica's tattoo of tamandua Terra’s snoot is more than just art; it’s a tribute to an animal who left a lasting impression. And Gonzo, our current tamandua, seemed to recognize the connection, giving the tattoo a sweet boop right on Erica’s arm.

Ever since I was a kid, I *thought* something about the "Star Wars" movies was true, but I never actually got around to testing my theory. Now, decades later, I'm testing it and… it seems totally valid (and cool!). Pretty sure it's not been talked about. Coming soon.

Ume has the zoomies! 🏎️

Baby Ume just explored the large waterfall habitat with her mom, Yuna, for the very first time. The 252-pound tapir calf swam, zoomied, snuffled through the grass, chomped on sticks and snacks, and chirped with pure tapir joy. 💗

State officials say Caledonia County appears to have suffered the worst damage from Thursday’s flash floods. And nowhere took a harder beating than the small town of Sutton, where multiple homes were severely damaged or destroyed.
Flooded again, Sutton residents return to damaged homes
Roughly 20 homes in Sutton remained cut off from road access as of Friday, according to Kyle Seymour, the town fire chief.

This is because of the Online Safety Act, and UK folks had better get used to doing this because every site on the internet that "is likely to be accessed by children" and has users in the UK will be doing this as of 25 July; that's Ofcom's deadline.
Starting July 25, Bluesky will require users in the UK to scan their face, upload an ID or verify their identity with a bankcard.

I realize that platforms feel they have no choice but to comply with the government surveillance schemes, but shocking nonetheless.
Bluesky is rolling out age verification in the UK
Bluesky users in the UK can verify their age using their face, ID, or payment card.

When techbros say they dream of a surveillance state, believe them. As expected: the company installing surveillance towers in the US will be Anduril (Lord of the Rings name, Peter Thiel investment). The one consolidating all your data and picking ICE targets: Palantir (LoTR name, Thiel founded). 1/
NEW: Buried inside the One Big Beautiful Bill Act is $6 billion for border security tech, including surveillance towers. CBP just confirmed to me that this surveillance tower money can *only* go to Anduril, the Trump-friendly military contractor. theintercept.com/2025/07/09/t...
Trump’s Big Beautiful Gift to Anduril
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act requires all new border surveillance towers to be certified "autonomous." Only Anduril's fit the bill.

The WSJ put out a nice graphic showing how Palantir, Anduril, and other techbro companies had salted loyalists salted through the executive branch, ready to hand them contracts. But this provision benefitting Anduril was written into a law directly. Ask: who inserted it? 5/

Here's Palmer Lucky, CEO of the Thiel-funded defense firm Anduril, a summary, and an unpaywalled link. Don't underestimate the corruption. It's not a coincidence that last night CBS ran a 60 Minutes show that was an hour-long infomercial for Anduril drones and weapons. 3/

The people getting no-bid contracts to surveil US citizens and take our data are a very small set of highly connected Silicon Valley techbros revolving around Peter Thiel, who has been seeking to end US democracy since about 2009. We must acknowledge the danger here. 4/

Exactly as predicted, now that DOGE has scraped all your personal data from government agencies, it's all being given to Peter Thiel's Palantir. It was always going to be Peter, who has dreamed of dictatorship for decades, patiently built his "political project". 1/
