Thanks for your support - and the suggestion! Working on the membership tiers!!!!

It's that time of year again...time to renew our @cbldf.bsky.social membership! Their work is more important than ever, and we (the royal we, not us specifically) are going to need them over the next year.

My only wish is that they had a support tier specifically for small publishers.

Fellow comic folks, we gotta be having the conversation over the sweeping censorship in this country right now. Between bad laws like this one (even if they may be meant in good spirit) and de facto censorship by credit card companies, like... it's one of greatest external problems to our business.

A big issue: any opposition, questions, requests for amendment, etc., exposed legislators to accusations of supporting cp

3. The proposal is buried in a section on explicit content and obscenity. Alongside pornography and graphic material, a new provision tells libraries what they cannot make available to anyone under 18. It reads:
“Under this section, any material that promotes, encourages, or positively depicts transgender procedures, gender ideology, or the concept of more than two biological genders shall be considered inappropriate for children and youth.” In other words: positive depictions of transgender people are forbidden, while negative depictions remain perfectly acceptable.

1. You may have heard of book bans before, but the new one in Alabama takes the cake.

The Alabama Public Library Service has a new proposal that would ban—get this—only "positive depictions" of trans people.

The hearing is next month. Public comment is open.

"Positive Depictions" Of Trans People Banned In Alabama State Libraries Proposal
The code change that has been proposed does not ban negative depictions of transgender people, however. Public comment is open until October 14.

Thanks to everyone emailing about the impact of Texas SB20 on manga & anime. We fought to keep this bill from being passed, but the TX legislature was locked in - no one wanted to risk opposing the bill publicly. We're working on next steps.

just watched our youth collections librarian be forced to remove 90% of our libraries' manga bc of texas legislation and i truly hate it here. this level of censorship is anti-intellectualism and against what it means to be a free country

Yeah no: Alberta gov't claims to allay school book ban concerns by revising order to clarify that won't apply to a "written passage", just a "visual depiction" – in other words, only graphic novels and manga are targeted.

Targeted books for removal include Gender Queer and Fun Home.

Bowd reportedly has been granted legal aid to help with the costs of the case, and he is currently free on bail, with the next court date set for November 6.

Because this is an ongoing case, I (Jeff) won't delve into the details of the pertinent law, except to note that as problematic as U.S. law and prosecutions can be, there are key safeguards here that do not exist elsewhere.
