Maybe this is a bad idea. But maybe not! But probably is.

I've been slacking on watching a lot of this year's major releases, so here's my catchup thread!

Let's see how many I can fit in before the end of 2024.

What an indecent waste of syllables--three paragraphs of "Gosh, things sure are complicated in this big world of ours and if we could all just sit and talk..." about the murder of an innocent woman by masked secret police. Centrist banality combined with narcissistic I-am-America's-pastor preening.

there is no reason for ICE to exist. immigrants aren’t doing anything wrong by trying to live and work and provide for their loved ones. I don’t care how people got here. if they want to be here that’s good. leave them alone.

JCS BACK IN THE KITCHEN.

What begins as a taut, and talky slow-burn thriller a la Wes Craven's RED EYE explodes into an edge-of-your-seat, Harlin-era action romp with a genuinely exciting turn from Jason Bateman and the best movie running since Tom Cruise from Taron Egerton.

It fucks. Turn it on.

A somewhat confusing but nonetheless engrossing portrait of the way the media we consume when we're young can reshape and reflect our realities and how dealing with yourself guarantees struggle, whether you answer the call or not.

Great work by Justice Smith, killer soundtrack.

Hey dawg.

I feel like we're about to enter a moment in our culture that really needs the MCU to get X-Men right.

And i think it's very clear that they won't.

Excited to be wrong!

HOT FROSTY really broke my brain for a number of reasons, but one thing I couldn't help but notice is that, even with all that lean muscle, Dustin Milligan looks

A friend of mine didn't like THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD but he got it upon rewatch. Not saying it's for everyone, but it's worth the revisit if one finds the time.

When people told me they weren't feeling it at first, I was always like, "Maybe you don't hate yourself enough yet." 😅

Yikes, dawg.

A monument to portent and little else. Promising first half undone by muddled, disconnected, tragically incomplete ideas in the second. Limping by with two admittedly great performances (Brody and, at times, Pearce) & some compelling if thematically meaningless photography.

I do not believe that GLADIIATOR was tailored to Paul Mescal's strengths.

Which is crazy because the movie cost like a quarter of a billion dollars and he has so many strengths!

I'm going to see it again though. 😅

Not giving the BlueSky thinkpieces the time of day but I do find it funny that all the handwringing about the app being an "echo chamber for the left" presumes that having your every post met with robots or trolls calling you "degenerate" or reveling in the misfortune of others is somehow virtuous.

There are a number of movies next year featuring Black leads with Black creative behind the camera, and I wanted to compile a list of them with dates and details so we can keep track of them and support!

At the theatre!

With our ticket dollars!

Please, y'all. 😅
