"Loki." Still nothing. What was he talking about now? A foldable boat? That was from a myth he was involved in, wasn't it? The one where he'd cut off Sif's hair? Maybe? "Loki!" He finally turned to her, just in time for their lips to meet and beautiful silence to fill the space. Morgan might have been a little enthusiastic in her clever plan to get some damn peace and quiet, her weight toppling Loki over so he was laid out on the couch rather than just sitting on it gesticulating wildly. Granted, she wasn't going to say anything when it made their continued kissing much easier. Because so long as they were kissing, Morgan had her goddamn peace and quiet.

Where are we?” she dared to ask. “Hiding place,” her captor said, sounding almost proud of himself. “I gathered as much. Where did all this stuff come from? Was it already here?” “This place was once used for underground, illegal medical procedures,” W-044 said. “Equipment was already here upon arrival. This unit decided to…not look a gift horse in the mouth.” “This place has anesthetics but no painkillers?” W-044 shook his head. “Medicines were picked clean. Likely sold on black market. The anesthetics this unit has access to were provided by handler for use on missions.” “Delightful,” Erin muttered, less afraid of the assassin by the minute. “This unit made use of what medical equipment was left behind to perform field surgery on Erin Raincrow,” he said, sounding pleased with himself. So… he didn’t patch her up on the way here. If she managed to survive, then they didn’t go very far. She’d already lost enough blood to faint, which was bad enough. She would have certainly needed a transfusion. How had he managed? There was no way any blood abandoned in a place like this would still be viable. She looked down at her arm, bandaged up at the crook of her elbow. “Whose blood did you give me?” “All Artificial Combat Units were created with O-negative blood types for maximum efficiency,” W-044 said. “Erin Raincrow’s AB-positive blood type was helpful in this instance, but unnecessary.” Erin almost rolled her eyes. Unnecessary, he said. “What do you plan to do now?” W-044 actually frowned. “This unit did not consider things past this current point.”

Erin couldn’t hold the gun still. She was going to be sick. “Is anything we’re working on here actually what it’s supposed to be…or is everything a front? The chemotherapy drugs Patricia’s team is working on? The new strain of rice from Carter’s?” “What can I tell you, my dear?” Tim sighed like he was speaking to a toddler. “Trance Corp doesn’t produce failures, just steppingstones to success. Just because you don’t like what we sell doesn’t mean it’s not profitable.” She inhaled deeply, lowering the gun. “You’re right…” Tim’s smile returned. How had she never noticed it didn’t reach his eyes? “I knew you’d underst—” Erin fired two shots into Tim’s thighs, glaring down at him as he collapsed screaming to the floor. “I don’t like what you’re selling.”

“You’re older than I expected,” she murmured. He snorted, turning back to the road with a wry smirk. “You have no idea, sunshine.” “Erin,” she corrected him. “I know you know my name.” “I do,” he agreed. “But I don’t know yours.” “Told you. I don’t have one.” She frowned, popping open the can of coffee. It smelled strongly of caramel. “You had to have been called something.” There was a long moment of silence between them. Now that the mask was gone, she could see the way his jaw worked as he considered things, like he was literally chewing on his thoughts. She settled back into the wide passenger seat, slightly angled so she wasn’t quite facing him, but also wasn’t not facing him. She took a sip of the coffee. He was right. It wasn’t any worse than the stuff she got at work. “J-097.” She froze with the can halfway to her mouth for a second sip. “I’m sorry?” “J-097,” he repeated. “That was my designation. Clone series J, number ninety-seven.” Erin’s jaw went slack, but her hands went tight, denting the can and sloshing some of the coffee out onto her skirt. She couldn’t bring herself to care at the moment. “You’re a Minuteman.” Minutemen – Erin was fairly certain their official name were ‘Artificial Combat Units,’ but no one called them that outside of government officials and the military contractors that made them – were introduced during the early years of the War as a solution to the many large, loud protests against the potential drafting of civilians. No need for a draft when you could grow a platoon of soldiers in a matter of months, training preprogrammed into their brains and everything. It was a miracle of modern science. The program was decommissioned after the Treaty of Philadelphia was signed at the end of the War. No one asked what happened to the clones that remained.

Chae-seo flicked the towel in his direction, the hit only making Chris laugh, his head tipping back and a hand going up to his chest. “Go on,” she challenged, taking on a facsimile of Marley’s barely-hanging-on Southern twang. “Git.” He beat a hasty retreat out the back door, and Erin could hear Anthony hollering at him, though she couldn’t make out the words exactly. Chae-seo huffed, hands on her hips and looking pleased with herself. “You’re so comfortable with each other already,” Erin pointed out, awed but a little uncertain. “He makes it easy,” Chae-seo admitted. “He’s…charming.” Erin nodded slowly. “He said his series was built for espionage. He…he said Jack was pretty enough to be a ‘doll’ like him.” Something crossed Chae-seo’s face. Something Erin couldn’t quite read. “Well,” she said after a time, turning to Erin with a tight smile. “That would explain it.” “Jack doesn’t seem to think he’s here to spy on us,” Erin said quickly, a sense of guilt making itself at home in her ribcage. “No,” Chae-seo agreed. “I didn’t get that sense either. Charming’s just…his default. Probably doesn’t know how to be anything else.” “Charming’s not a bad thing to be.” Chae-seo smiled again, a little more natural this time. “No. It’s not.”

Erin wasn’t sure what was worse: the waiting or the not knowing. She sat in the driver’s seat, watching the loading docks in the rearview mirror. She had no way to communicate with Jack and the others. Her phone didn’t work outside the very limited region of phone towers the Oregon State engineers set up, and Chris and Anthony hadn’t exactly brought radios with them when the left the mercenary company. So, all she could do was sit. And wait. A sound reached her ears, high pitched and whining in a way that made her brows twitch. She turned over her shoulder, squinting at the loading dock. Nothing. Nothing she could see anyway. She turned to open the door, but just as she did, she heard something else. “Stay in the truck!” Her head snapped up, and she saw Anthony gunning it towards her with a hovercart piled high with crate upon crate of Universal Component. Probably more than she could use in a lifetime. Behind him, Jack and Chris were running and gunning. Behind them was a small army of security bots. “What happened?!” Erin shouted, backing up the truck so Anthony could basically push the cart into the bed. It wouldn’t be secure, but it’d be faster than trying to move the crates between the two. “I thought you said they were blind to us!” “Blind and deaf,” Anthony agreed, and Erin had never heard one of the super soldiers sound breathless before. “But Chris can’t fuckin’ drive, apparently. Bumped into one of them with the cart.” He scoffed at the man. “Some spy.” “I said I was sorry!” Chris shouted over his shoulder, laying down cover fire as Jack and Anthony jumped into the truck bed with the crates.

He ducked his head with a soft laugh, that beautiful, boyish smile tugging at the corners of his lips. She stole that smile with another kiss. Wandering hands left trails of goosebumps in their wake as his fingers trailed up the outside of her thighs and up the steppingstones that were her vertebra. He pulled away, though his face said he didn’t really want to. “Gotta check your injuries.” He placed one last peck on her lips before hoisting her up off his lap and onto the edge of the tub once more. “Put them in the water for me, sweetheart.” Erin shivered at the new endearment, gingerly settling her feet in the lightly steaming water. She hissed at the heat at first, and the sting of it against the cuts that littered her skin. Jack said on the toilet next to her, towel on his lap and medical supplies on the counter next to him. He tapped her thigh with the back of his hand. “First one,” he requested. Erin couldn’t help but smile as she lifted her foot into his lap. His frown of concentration looked almost like a pout, his brows furrowed as he brushed his thumb against a bruise. “Doesn’t look too bad,” he murmured, slathering ointment on her cuts. “Lucky there wasn’t kind of glass in the fields. Or nails. Might need to keep you off your feet for a day or two, though.” Erin huffed out a little laugh. “Are you sure you weren’t meant to be a medic?” Jack leveled her with a fondly exasperated look. “I’m positive. The E, M, and T series were medics.” She narrowed her eyes. “That was on purpose, wasn’t it?”
